Softball Sees Offensive Explosion in DH Split with CAU

OXFORD, Ala. – The Talladega College softball team piled up 22 runs during a doubleheader split against the Clark Atlanta University Lady Panthers Sunday afternoon at Choccolocco Park. The Tornadoes won the first game against the NCAA Division II opponent 5-0 and dropped a high-scoring second contest 19-17.

GAME 1 – Talladega 5, Clark Atlanta 0

Ashli-Nicole Gutierrez scored the first run of the day in the third with some heady base running after Monet Brown reached on an error. Brown later scored on a passed ball to move the score to 2-0.

Then, in the sixth inning, Rayna Davis smashed a two-RBI double to drive in Gabriele Garcia and Haylee Clausell. Elisa Clay then nabs a sacrifice fly to right field to plate Davis and collect the 5-0 win.

Davis finished as the leader at the plate after going 1-for-3 at the plate with a double and two RBIs. Marianna Perez was credited with a stolen base.

Miranda Butler pitched a complete game shutout with three strikeouts and four hits allowed.

GAME 2 – Clark Atlanta 19, Talladega 17

Offense was not optional in the second game of the doubleheader, highlighted by Rasheedah Hasan smashing a home run to left field for CAU and grabbing a 1-0 lead.

Talladega responded with nine straight runs in the bottom of the first, starting with an RBI for Garcia who reached on fielder's choice while Clausell crossed home plate. Elisa Clay received an RBI when she reached on an error, and Brown scored. K'yanna Wimbish singled to left field for two RBIs as Davis and Garcia scored.

Continuing in the first, Ladaijia Fitzgerald collected an RBI single as Clay scored, followed by an RBI single for Clausell to knock in Wimbish. An error at first base during Brown's single allowed Fitzgerald to score from second base. Garcia capped the colossal inning with a two-RBI triple to enable Brown and Clausell to touch home and put Dega up 9-1.

CAU used the middle innings to chip away at the lead with a run in the second and two in the third to cut the score to 9-4. The Lady Panthers used a monstrous fifth inning to rally and take the lead with eight runs scored, highlighted by a three-RBI triple from Kenedie Matthews, as Clark Atlanta pushed to a 12-9 advantage.

The Tornadoes battled back to reclaim the lead in the bottom of the fifth, starting with an RBI single from Brown to knock in Brooklyn Talton. Garcia followed with a double for two RBIs as Brown and Clausell scored. Davis doubled to left center as Garcia scored and later scored after Clay received an RBI on a groundout to go up 14-12.

However, the bats started cooking once more for CAU as the Lady Panthers posted seven runs in the sixth, capped by an RBI single by Coreya Quarterman to move the score to 19-14.

Dega attempted one more rally in the seventh after Garcia scored while Clay reached on an error. Wimbish followed with a single to left, which was good for an RBI as Davis scored. Butler earned an RBI after an error that allowed her to reach first, and Clay scored to cap the barnburner at the 19-17 final score.
