Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women’s Hoops Fall Short against NCAA D2 Fort Valley State

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – The Talladega College women's basketball team continued improving as the game progressed. However, an early slow start led to a 55-44 loss to NCAA Division II opponent Fort Valley State Monday evening.

Jordan Austin finished as the top performer for Dega (6-14) with 11 points and 11 rebounds, while Makayla Arnold posted 11 points, seven rebounds, and two steals.

The Wildcats (11-8) pushed to a 16-6 advantage after the first ten minutes and won the second quarter 11-6 to take a commanding 27-12 lead to the locker room.

After hitting only 4-of-25 shots in the first half, the Tornadoes offense completely turned around in the second half and finished 46.7 percent (14-of-30) in the second half.

Despite the offense coming alive for Talladega, Fort Valley State did just enough to keep the visiting Tornadoes at arm's length. Dega won the third quarter 15-12 but trailed by 12 points, 39-27, entering the final period.

In the fourth, the Tornadoes pulled as close as within nine points, 46-37, with 4:20 remaining, but the Wildcats pushed ahead to the 55-43 win to sweep the season series.

Ayana Cockrell posted a double-double for FVSU with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Ace Stevenson added 12 points.

Talladega College plays the final of six straight on the road Saturday at 2 p.m. against Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee.
