Baseball Falls In Doubleheader at Thomas (Ga.)

THOMASVILLE, Ga. – The Talladega College baseball team was swept in the doubleheader part of the three-game series against Thomas University this afternoon. The Night Hawks took game one 10-4 and then claimed game two 17-7 to win the series 3-0.

The Tornadoes fell to 0-3 on the season while Thomas improved to 5-0.

Talladega is back in action Tuesday, Feb 6 for its home openers against Tuskegee University. First pitch is set for noon.

Game 1: Talladega 4, Thomas 10
The Tornadoes opened up the top of the first when Darlin Fernandez singled to left and then took second on a wild pitch. He later scored off Victor Rivera's RBI single to center to put Talladega up 1-0 with no outs.  Rivera moved himself into scoring position when he stole second. He then was able to take third off of Miguel Oropeza's ground out back to the pitcher.  With one down and a runner on third, Nomar Garcia was plunked to put runners on the corners.  Rivera scored off of Isaac Guzman's double to center to make it, 2-0. Garcia took third on the play before back-to-back strikeouts ended the early threat.

Thomas was able to get one of the two runs back in the bottom of the first off, a pair of hits to make it, 2-1.

The Night Hawks tied the game at two in the bottom of the second off an error and a pair of hits.

After each team went scoreless in the third, the Tornadoes retook the lead in the top of the fourth. With one down, Armando Jackson singled into left before being lifted for a pinch runner.  Pinch runner Jeriel Lamboy moved up 90 feet off a wild pitch.  Jaylen Mateo followed up with a walk to put runners on first and second with one down before both runners advanced a base each off an error by the Thomas pitcher.  Fernandez's two-out single to short allowed both runners to score to put Talladega back in front, 4-2.

Thomas took its first and only lead of the game in the bottom of the fifth when it plated eight runs on five hits to take a 10-4 lead.

The Night Hawks bullpen allowed just two runners in the final two innings and secured the win.

Four Talladega players tallied multiple hits in the contest.  Fernandez and Rivera combined going 6-for-8 with three RBIs, and two runs scored. Rivera added a stolen base in the process.

Samuel Guadamuz took the loss on the mound for the Tornadoes. He threw 4.1 innings allowing six runs on six hits, and three walks while fanning three.

 
Game 2: Talladega 7, Thomas 17
With one down in the top of the first, Rivera walked and then took second on a wild pitch.  Talladega loaded the bases with Oropeza walk then Jackson was hit by a pitch. Both Rivera and Oropeza scored off Guzman's two-run single to short to put the Tornadoes in front 2-0 before the inning ended.

The Night Hawks were able to cut the lead to 2-1 off a pair of hits in the bottom of the first.

Talladega tacked on another pair of runs in the top of the second to push its lead to 4-1 using a pair of hits, a walk, and taking advantage of a few Thomas errors.

Thomas was able to hold the Tornadoes scoreless in the top of the third before the Night Hawks plated five runs on three hits and an error to take a 6-4 lead after three innings of work.
The Tornadoes were able to tie things up in the top of the fourth scoring its third pair of runs, but in the bottom of the frame, Thomas pushed seven runs across to take a 13-6 lead.

Thomas tacked on three more runs in the fifth and one in the sixth while Talladega pushed a run across in its half of the sixth.

The Night Hawks allowed just one hit in the top of the seventh to go on to win, 17-7.

Rivera finished the game going 2-for-3 with three runs scored, an RBI, and a pair of walks.

Starter Daniel Jose took the loss for Talladega. He three four innings allowing 13 runs on 10 hits while fanning four.
