TALLADEGA, Ala. – The Talladega men's volleyball team was tripped up on Monday night, falling in both ends of a doubleheader at the hands of St. Mary-of-the-Woods. The Pomeroys took the opener with set scores of 25-23, 25-20, 28-26 before taking Game 2 with scores of 26-24, 25-,21, 25-19.
The first set of the day saw both teams go back and forth before Talladega tied it up at 23 late. The Pomeroys came away with back-to-back points to close out the set, taking the early 1-0 lead.
SMWC opened the second set on a 6-1 run, but Talladega capped a 10-6 run of their own with a big kill from
Denzel Pepper to cut the deficit to one. The Blue and Red would get no closer, allowing SMWC to pull away for the 25-20 victory.
Talladega raced out to a 5-2 lead in the third set in an effort to force a fourth set, eventually building up to a 19-11 edge. The Pomeroys used eight straight points to rally, ultimately holding on for the sweep.
Ty'Sean Wallace led the Tornadoes with nine kills, while
Hugo Marques and
Mallik Foreman followed with seven apiece.
Elijah Foster poured in 23 assists, while Pepper picked up two solo blocks.
Talladega came out with another strong start in the nightcap, with Foreman picking up back-to-back kills to put the Tornadoes within a point of a set win, but SMWC stormed back with three straight points to earn the 26-24 victory and take another 1-0 lead.
The second set saw a 17-17 tie before the Pomeroys rattled off eight of the next 12 points to win their fifth set of the day. SMWC kept rolling the final set of the evening, picking up their biggest set victory of the doubleheader.
Pepper led the team in the nightcap with nine kills, with Foreman finishing on his heels with eight.
Andrea Tognazzo tallied 14 digs to set a new season-high, while Foster ended the two-match day with a total of 55 assists.
The Tornadoes are back in action on Wednesday, when they play host to Central State for two matches. First serve is slated for 4:00 p.m.
