Women’s Basketball Drops Regular Season Finale to Philander Smith

TALLADEGA, Ala. – The Talladega College women's basketball team wrapped the regular season and the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference slate with a 98-68 loss to Philander Smith College Saturday afternoon at the Hawkins Student Activity Center.
 
Amayla Sharif led the Tornadoes (9-18, 6-9 GCAC) with 14 points, while Kelcei Rivers posted 13 points, nine rebounds, and four assists in a reserve role.
 
Turnovers proved to be the difference in the contest, as Philander Smith turned 29 Tornado turnovers into 48 points off turnovers. Conversely, Dega turned 28 turnovers from the Panthers into 23 points.
 
Talladega led briefly early when Destiny Johnson posted a layup in the opening seconds. However, the lead did not last long after Dasia Turner tied the game with a layup on the other end, and Miya Yelder posted a layup to move the Panthers ahead 4-2. PSC went on to take a 28-16 lead after the first quarter and later a 55-28 lead to the half.
 
Philander Smith pushed the lead to 44 points when Yelder hit a three-pointer to move the score to 75-31 with 5:16 left in the third. Dega outscored the Panthers 21-14 in the fourth on the way to the 98-68 final.
 
Elaijha Brown led the Panthers and all scorers with 22 points, 11 steals, and eight assists. Turner posted 20 points and seven rebounds.
 
Talladega College is not done as the Tornadoes prepare for the Hope Credit Union GCAC Championship tournament on the Stillman College campus in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Game time and opponent are yet to be determined as of this writing.
