Men's Volleyball Drops a Pair of Matches at Maryville

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Talladega College men's volleyball team played a pair of matches at Maryville University tonight.  The Saints took both matches 3-0 to improve to 6-3 while the Tornadoes fell to 2-9 on the season.

Talladega is back in action on Friday, Feb 16 when it travels to Fort Valley State University.  The match is set to start at 5 p.m.

Match 1, Talladega 0, Maryville 3 (13-25, 14-25, 12-25)
The Saints took a 10-3 lead in set one but Talladega fought to keep the lead to single digits and within reach. The Tornadoes got the difference to seven but that was as close as they would come. The Maryville lead was too much to overcome as the Saints claimed the set, 25-13.

Looking to bounce back in set two, Talladega and Maryville found themselves tied at six. The Saints scored back-to-back points to take an 8-6 lead but the Tornadoes were able to get one of the points back to make it, 8-7. Maryville put together a 9-2 run to go up, 17-9.  Talladega scored the next three points to make it a five-point difference, but the Saints closed the set out with an 8-2 run to win, 25-14.

Talladega looking to force a fourth set kept set three close as it trailed, 9-8.  Maryville used a 14-1 run to take a commanding 23-9 lead and later would go on to win 25-12 and take the match, 3-0.

Ivory Smith finished with 11 assists for Talladega while Andrea Tognazzo tallied 11 digs.

Hugo Marques, Denzel Pepper, and Ty'Sean Wallace each registered three kills apiece.

Match 2, Talladega 0, Maryville 3 (6-25, 17-25, 7-25)
Maryville jumped out to a 10-3 lead in set one in Match Two. The Saints then used a 10-0 run to take a commanding 20-3 lead before going on to win 25-6 and go up 1-0 in the match.

Trailing 13-4 in the second two, Talladega fought its way back to cut the lead to six and trail 20-14. Maryville closed the match out on a 5-3 run to win, 25-17.

Maryville opened set three up with a 5-0 lead but the Tornadoes used a 3-2 run to cut the lead to four.  The Saints then used a 13-3 run to take a 20-7 lead before scoring the final five points to win 25-7 and take the match, 3-0.

Smith registered a team-high seven assists and tied for digs with seven while adding a kill. Teammate Tognazzo tied Smith in digs with seven while adding two kills of his own.

Marques finished the match with three kills to give him six on the day.
