TALLADEGA, Ala. – The Talladega College men's basketball team extended its winning streak to five with a 67-49 win over visiting Point University tonight. The Tornadoes won both meetings this season against Point. Talladega finished with four players in double-figures in points in tonight's contest with
Corey Sands pacing the way.
Talladega leaped out to a 14-3 lead to open the contest, but Point trimmed the lead to six when it trailed 22-16 with 6:33 left in the half. Both teams went back and forth with the Tornadoes holding the edge at 26-23, but a Point three tied the game with a minute left. The Tornadoes answered with 23 seconds left when
Lamont Sams hit a three to go back in front 29-26 going into halftime.
Coming out of the locker room Point cut the lead to one but Sams provided Talladega with a cushion as he hit a jumper to make it 31-28 at 17:30. He then hit back-to-back foul shots to make it 33-28 but a Point three-pointer made it a two-point game. The Tornadoes used a 19-3 run to push their lead to 52-34 with just a little over eight minutes. Point attempted to chip away at the lead but it wasn't enough as the Talladega defense held them to just 23 points for the half to help the Tornadoes secure the win.
Talladega tallied 17 points off turnovers to Points seven while also winning the battle in the paint 22 to 12.
The Tornadoes shot over 60 percent from beyond the arc while shooting 83 percent from the line.
Sands led Talladega in points with 17 while grabbing six boards and finishing with a team-high three steals. He was 5 of 6 from three and 6 of 10 from the field.
Teammate Sams was also 6 of 10 from the floor while tallying 15 points. Both
Shaun Walker and
Wilfred Campbell each finished with 10 points. Walker grabbed a team-high seven rebounds and two blocks.
Talladega is back on the road Thursday, Dec. 5 at 6 p.m. when it faces conference foe Fisk University.
