Women’s Basketball Earns Second Straight Win with Victory over Tougaloo

NEW ORLEANS – The good times kept rolling for the Talladega College women's basketball team during the second matchup of the Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletics Conference Crossover event. The Tornadoes came away with a 49-34 win over the Tougaloo College Lady Bulldogs Saturday afternoon.
 
Kameron Jones led all scorers with 17 points alongside five rebounds, five steals and five assists. DeJaria Lewis led on the boards with 10 rebounds and added eight points, five blocks, and a pair of steals.
 
Jones opened all scoring just seconds into the contest with a jumper, but TC's Brayland Ferguson went on a personal 4-0 run to capture the lead for the Lady Bulldogs at 4-2.
 
Successful free throws from Lewis reclaimed the advantage for Dega, but Mer'Cades Miller hit a shot to put Tougaloo back on top 6-5. However, Jones secured another lead change of the game with a jumper to put Talladega ahead with 1:18 left in the opening quarter. The Tornadoes pushed to a 13-8 lead to end the first.
 
In the second quarter, Dega pressed to as much as a nine-point advantage when Lewis connected on a bucket to put the team up 19-10. TC battled to close the gap and face a 21-17 deficit at the half.
 
Tougaloo took the lead on consecutive possessions in the third quarter capped by a shot from Sharisse Brides to move the score to 24-23. The Tornadoes responded with 12-6 run to end the period and take a 35-30 lead to the fourth.
 
Talladega dominated the fourth and pushed to as much as a 16-point, 49-33 lead with just over a minute to go before a successful free throw from the Lady Bulldogs aided to reach the 49-34 final score.
 
The Tornadoes finished 31.3 percent (20-of-64) from the floor, 23.1 percent (3-of-13) beyond the arc, and 42.9 percent (6-of-14) at the free throw line.
 
Ferguson and Bridges both posted nine points and eight rebounds to lead Tougaloo.
 
The Lady Bulldogs posted a 26.7 percent (12-of-45) effort from the floor, 12.5 percent (2-of-16) from three, and 47.1 percent (8-of-17) at the line.
 
Talladega College returns to action Monday evening in New Orleans at Dillard University starting at 5 p.m.
