Women’s Basketball Falters in Road Contest at Life

MARIETTA, Ga. – The Talladega College women's basketball team got off to a slow start and never recovered in a loss to fellow NAIA member Life University Running Eagles 51-36 Saturday afternoon.
 
DeJaria Lewis produced a phenomenal game with 20 points and 19 rebounds to lead the Tornadoes (1-2).
 
Neither team cranked up with an offensive masterpiece as both squads combined for 11 points in the opening quarter. Kiersten Usher scored first in the game at the 9:15 mark, but Life responded second later with two free throws by Aniya Offutt.
 
A three by Khloe Vaughn put the Running Eagles up 5-2 for the first and final lead change of the game. Life went on to take a 7-4 lead to the second.
 
Talladega opened the second quarter with a layup from Usher to cut the lead to 7-6, but Life pushed to an 11-6 lead after a layup from Maikya Simmons.
 
The Tornadoes pulled within one point once more with a bucket by Lewis with 4:35 left in the stanza to move the score to 11-10, but Life put together another run to separate to a 17-12 advantage at the half.
 
Life and Talladega went back and forth in the third, but the Running Eagles won the period 14-12 to take a 31-24 lead to the fourth. In the final period, Life outscored Dega 20-12 in the final quarter to push to the 51-36 final score.
 
The Tornadoes finished 25 percent (15-of-60) from the floor, 12.5 percent (2-of-16) from beyond the arc, and 36.4 percent (4-of-11) from the free throw line.
 
Brionna Sims led Life with 13 points and Simmons added 10 points.
 
The Running Eagles totaled 34.9 percent (15-of-43) shooting, 36.4 percent (4-of-11) from three, and 58.6 percent (17-of-29) from the line.
 
Talladega College returns to action Dec. 5 at 4 p.m. in Nashville, Tennessee, against Fisk University in Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference action.
