HATTIESBURG, Miss. –
Lamont Sams' double-double leads Talladega College men's basketball to a 75-59 road win over William Carey University tonight. The Tornadoes are now 6-2 on the season while the Crusaders fall to 6-3 on the year.
Talladega jumped out to a 6-2 lead to start the game but a Crusader three made it a one-point game with just under 17 minutes left. The teams traded baskets with the Tornadoes holding an 11-8 edge, but back-to-back Crusader free throws and a three-pointer gave them their first lead to make it, 13-11. The lead didn't last long as Sams tied the game at 13 but the Crusaders retook it off a pair of foul shots at 9:42. Talladega tied things at 15 and then
Arthur Williams hit a pair of foul shots to make it 17-15 Tornadoes. The Tornadoes' defense was able to hold the Crusaders back as both teams went back and forth with Talladega taking a 32-28 lead into the locker.
The Tornadoes wasted no time getting on the board to start the second half when
Tre Simmons hit a pair of foul shots less than 30 seconds in to make it, 34-28. For most of the half Talladega never gave up the lead, but the Crusaders made sure to keep things close for almost the first 10 minutes. With the Tornadoes up 51-43, they were able to put together a 15-7 run to break things open and go up 66-50 with 6:19 remaining in the contest. The Talladega defense allowed just nine more points for the rest of the game while the offense tallied another nine points to secure a 75-59 victory.
Talladega posted 24 points in the paint while only giving up 10 points. Sixteen of the 24 points came in the second half for the Tornadoes.
The Tornadoes cleaned up on the glass as it grabbed 40 boards to the Crusaders 29.
Sams, who tallied a double-double registered 23 points and 11 boards while finishing with two blocks. He shot 10 of 14 from the field while going 3 of 4 from the line.
Teammates
Corey Sands and Simmons each tallied double figures in points. Sands finished with 16 while Simmons tallied 10 points. Sands finished with a game-high four three-pointers made. Simmons grabbed six boards in the process.
Wilfred Campbell dished out a team-high seven assists while adding four paints.
Talladega is back home on Monday, Dec. 2 when it hosts Point University at 6 p.m. CT.
