Tornadoes Edge Out LeMoyne-Owen on Late Layup

MEMPHIS, Tenn.Shaun Walker's late lay-in helps the Talladega College men's basketball team edge out NCAA Division II member LeMoyne-Owen College 58-57 this afternoon on the road.  The Tornadoes are now 5-2 on the season while the Magicians fall to 0-4. This is the second time this week that Talladega has beaten the Magicians.

LeMoyne-Owen took an early 10-3 lead in the first half, but Talladega chipped away to pull within six with 10:05 left to trail, 18-12. The Magicians used a 10-5 run to push their lead to 28-17 with less than four minutes left in the half. Back-to-back foul shots from Lamont Sams and a jumper by Corey Sands cut the lead back to single-digits with just over three minutes remaining. Talladega closed out the half using a 5-3 run to trail 33-28 going into the half.

Coming out of the locker room, the Magicians wasted no time striking first as they laid one in seven seconds into the half to push the lead to, 35-28. Talladega responded with a three from Tre Simmons and a layup by Sams to make it a one-possession game with 17:14 on the clock. LeMoyne-Owen used a 6-0 run to push its lead to 41-35, but Wilfred Campbell responded for Talladega with a three to make it, 41-38. Both teams traded points for the next 7 minutes and 31 seconds to only find themselves tied at 50 with 6:01 left in the game. Campbell's layup at 5:45 gave the Tornadoes their first lead of the game to go up, 52-50.

Talladega was able to hold a 56-54 advantage following Simmons' pair of foul shots but the lead didn't last long as the Magicians tied things up with 44 seconds to go and drew a foul shot on the play, giving them the 57-56 lead. With just 21 seconds to go, Talladega pushed the ball down-court to get the pass to  Walker who laid it in to make it 58-57 Tornadoes with just nine seconds left. The Talladega defense after that kicked in and secured the victory.
As a team, Talladega won the battle in the paint 24 to 18 and the defense forced 16 turnovers.

Sams and Arthur Williams each finished with 10 points for Talladega. The two combined going 6 of 11 from the field, 1 of 2 from three, and 7 of 8 from the line while grabbing seven boards in the process.

Teammates Campbell, Sands, and Simmons each tallied eight points. Campbell was a perfect 2 of 2 from three-point range.

Walke, who nailed the game-winning shot tallied seven points and five rebounds. He also added three assists.

Talladega is back on the road on Wednesday, Nov. 27 when it faces William Carey University at 4 p.m. CT.
