TALLADEGA, Ala. – Three Tornadoes tally double-digits in points to help the Talladega College men's basketball team to a 60-47 win over visiting Wilberforce University this afternoon to start the conference part of the schedule. With the win, Talladega is now 3-2 and 1-0 in the HBCUAC while the Bulldogs fall to 3-2 and 1-1.
Both teams found themselves tied at five less than five minutes into the contest, but a Bulldog three-pointer broke the tie to make it, 8-5. The lead didn't last long as
Corey Sands drained one of his four threes at 15:04 to tie things up at eight. Talladega after that was able to use an 11-6 run to take a 19-14 lead but the Bulldogs chipped away to knot things at 21 with 5:41 left in the half. Each team traded points to only end up tied again but this time at 24 with 3:14 to go. The Tornadoes used an 8-4 run to take a 32-28 lead going into the locker room.
Coming out of the half, Talladega pushed its lead to 34-28 following a slam by
Lamont Sams less than two minutes in. The Bulldogs responded as it scored the next seven straight points to go in front 35-34 with 15:43 left. A tip-in by
Jordan Brewer put the Tornadoes back on top this time at 36-35 but a layup by the Bulldogs gave them the lead right back at, 37-36. Back-to-back foul shots by Brewer put Talladega ahead 38-37 with just under 13 minutes to go. The teams went back and forth only to find themselves tied at 44. Talladega then used a 16-3 run to close out the game and claim a 60-47 victory.
Talladega dominated in the paint outscoring the Bulldogs 28-14 and the Tornadoes were able to tally 15 points off turnovers.
The Tornadoes shot 53.3% from the field while going 40% from beyond the arc, and 80% from the line.
Sams led the Tornadoes with 14 points going 7-of-12 from the field while dishing out three assists and recording one of the team's three blocks.
Shaun Walker and Sands each finished with 12 points. Walker also led the team in rebounds with eight while going a perfect 5-of-5 from the floor. Sands tallied all of his points from three-point range going 4-of-8. His four threes were a team-high. Sands also grabbed five boards in the process.
Talladega's
Tre Simmons led the team in steals with a team-high four adding five points to his line. Teammate
Wilfred Campbell finished with a game-high eight assists while registering six points.
Talladega is back home on Tuesday, Nov. 19 when it hosts LeMoyne-Owen College at 7 p.m. in a non-conference meeting.
