TALLADEGA, Ala. – The Talladega College women's volleyball team closed out the HBCUAC Crossover with a 3-0 (25-13, 25-14, 25-17) win this morning over conference foe Wily University. The Tornadoes are now 19-7 overall and 12-1 in the conference while the Wildcats fall to 2-15 and 2-11 in the HBCUAC.
Wiley grabbed an early 5-1 lead in the opening set, but the Tornadoes wasted no time as they used a 5-0 run to take a 6-5 lead. The Wildcats tied the set at six but back-to-back points by Talladega put it back in front, 8-6. Talladega broke things open when it put together an 8-2 run to go up, 16-8. Wiley attempted to chip away but it wasn't enough as the Tornadoes claimed the set 25-13 and took a 1-0 lead in the match.
After trailing 1-0 in set two, Talladega strung together a 12-1 run to grab a commanding 12-2 lead. Wiley worked its way back into it to cut the lead to, 18-6. It wasn't enough as the Tornadoes early lead held and it allowed them to pick up a 25-14 win.
With the momentum in Talladega's favor going into set three, it showed as the Tornadoes jumped out to an 8-2 lead. The Wildcats refused to go away as they responded with a 7-1 run to tie things at nine. Talladega answered with a short 4-0 run to go back in front, 13-9. Both teams traded points with the Tornadoes holding a 16-14 lead before using an 8-0 run to break things open and go up, 24-14. Wiley attempted to get back into it by scoring the next three points straight, but a kill by Talladega's
Marcelly Perez secured the win for the Tornadoes.
Talladega out hit the Wildcats .448 to .098 throughout the three sets.
The Tornadoes tallied a match-high 13 aces to Wiley's one.
Taquoia Rounds finished with 11 kills on 21 attempts for Talladega while teammate
Re'na Ashley finished with eight kills on a .583 hitting percentage.
Nuria Santos paced the Tornadoes with seven aces while adding 14 assists of her own. Fellow setter
Giovana Costarelli once again led the team in assists with 16.
Stella Lukaszuk finished with a team-high 10 digs while adding two aces. Teammate
Briyith Echeverri registered six digs while picking up a pair of aces.
Talladega hits the road on Tuesday, Oct. 22 when it travels to conference rival Stillman College for a 6 p.m. match.
