Volleyball Cruises to Win at Stillman

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Talladega College women's volleyball team picked up its 20th win with a 3-0 (25-8, 25-16, 25-9) on the road against conference rival Stillman College tonight. This is the second time in back-to-back seasons the Tornadoes have registered 20 wins or more. Last year, Talladega finished with 31 wins.

Talladega improved to 20-7 and 13-1 in the HBCUAC while Stillman fell to 7-17 and 6-8 in the conference.

The Tornadoes took a 6-2 lead to open set one, but Stillman was able to claw its way back into it to trail, 7-5. Talladega broke things open using a 12-1 run to go up 19-6 and from that the Tornadoes cruised to a 25-8 victory and took the lead in the match.

Looking to continue the momentum in set two, Talladega jumped out to a 5-1 lead. The Tornadoes were able to push its lead to 11-4 off a 6-3 run, but both teams after that traded points with Talladega holding the edge at, 20-16. The Tornadoes used a 5-0 run to take the set 25-16 and go up 2-0 in the match.

Talladega's goal was to close things out in set three and it did just that at the start when the Tornadoes took a 13-2 lead. The Tornadoes pushed the lead to 19-4 off a 6-2 run and would go on to a 25-9 victory to take the match 3-0.

The Tornadoes as a team hit .405 for the match while tallying 40 kills on 79 attacks.

Zariah Messick, Franchesca Rivas, Marcelly Perez, and Re'na Ashley all recorded seven kills apiece to led Talladega.

Giovana Costarelli paced the team with 18 assists while teammate Nuria Santos finished with 14 of her own.

Stella Lukaszuk finished with a season-high seven aces.  The Tornadoes as a team finished with 13 aces.

Taquoia Rounds registered 11 digs while adding two kills.

Talladega is back home on Friday at 6 p.m. when it hosts Fisk University in its final conference match of the regular season.
