MIDWAY, Ky. - Talladega College men's volleyball team picked up back-to-back 3-0 wins today against Midway University and Bluefield University (Va.). With the wins, the Tornadoes improved to 2-3 on the season while both Midway and Bluefield fell to 0-1.
Mallik Foreman throughout both matches tallied 28 kills while
Elijah Foster finished with 51 assists on the day.
Talladega is back on the road on Wednesday, Jan 31 when it travels to Marietta, Georgia to take on Life University at 6 p.m. (7 p.m. ET).
Match 1: Talladega 3, Midway 0 (25-21, 25-23, 25-22)
Talladega struck first in the opening set as it took a 7-2 lead before Midway tallied the next four points straight to make it one point set. Because of the early start, the Tornadoes were able to keep the Eagles in check as they didn't allow Midway to come any closer than three points in the set. Talladega was able to take the set 25-21 and go up 1-0 to start the match.
Midway looked to even things up in set two as it scored the first point, but Talladega had different plans as it used a 5-0 run to take a 5-1 lead. The Eagles attempted to claw their way back into the set to make it a four-point difference and only trail, 11-7. Midway then put together a 4-0 to tie things at 11, but Talladega responded to take a 12-11 lead then Midway tied it back up again. The Tornadoes used a 3-0 run to take a 15-12 lead and after that, both teams went back and forth with Talladega holding the edge to win, 25-23.
Tied at one in set three, Talladega took an early 4-1 lead, but Midway answered back going on a 5-0 run to go up, 6-4. The Tornadoes looking to close things out retook the lead to make it 7-6, but the Eagles took the next two points to go up, 8-7. Both teams found themselves trying to gain ground on each other for most of the set and it didn't happen when Talladega had a 21-19 lead. The Tornadoes were able to score back-to-back points to give themselves some breathing room. Talladega was able to hold off a late Eagles' rally to take the set and match, 25-22.
As a team, Talladega finished with 11 aces to break the season-high seven set on Friday, Jan 26 against Indiana Tech.
Foreman led Talladega in kills with a match-high 16 while adding five digs in the process. Teammate
Ty'Sean Wallace finished with eight kills and a team-high four aces.
Foster paced both teams with 29 assists while
Andrea Tognazzo registered 10 digs for Talladega. Fosher also finished with two aces.
Match 2: Talladega 3, Bluefield (Va.) 0 (29-27, 27-25, 25-14)
In the opening set, both teams found themselves tied three times before Talladega used a 3-0 run to take a 10-7 lead. Following the Tornadoes' run, they were able to hold a lead for most of the set until Bluefield rattled off three straight points to tie things at 23. Both teams went back and forth to end up tied at 25 forcing either to win by two. Each team had a chance at a set point only to end up tied at 27, but back-to-back kills by Foreman and Wallace locked in a 29-27 win for Talladega.
Talladega opened set two with a 3-2 lead before Bluefield used a 4-0 run to go up by two. The Rams were able to hold a lead for most of the set as they looked to even the match at one, but the Tornadoes used a late 6-0 run that started off a Rams error to take a 24-23 lead. Each team scored a point apiece to end up tied at 25, but Talladega took advantage of back-to-back Bluefield errors to claim the set and go up 2-0 in the match
Talladega looked to close out the match in three sets, as it jumped out to a 5-0 lead. The Rams were able to score two of the next three points to trail, 6-2, but Talladega pushed its lead to 11-0 off a 5-0 run. Bluefield attempted to try and close the gap on the scoreboard, but the Tornadoes' lead was too much to overcome as Talladega took the set 25-14 to win the match.
Talladega hit 23.7 percent for the match with a hitting percentage high of 44.4 percent in set three.
Foreman finished the match with 12 kills for Talladega while
Hugo Marques and Wallace each had seven kills. Marques and Wallace finished with 5.0 blocks.
Foster tallied 22 assists for the Tornadoes and Tognazzo finished with double-digits in digs with 10.
