Bench Guides Men's Basketball To GCAC Win Over Rust

TALLADEGA, Ala. – The Talladega College bench leads men's basketball to a 62-51 win over Rust College in GCAC home action tonight. The win extended Talladega's win streak to 14 while the team improved to 16-1 overall and 6-0 in the conference. Rust fell to 6-9 and 3-6 in the GCAC.

The Talladega bench tallied 33 points to Rust's 16. The Tornadoes had 19 of the 33 points come in the first half alone.

For most of the first half, both teams went back and forth with the lead being no more than two points or tied. But it wasn't until Shaun Walker's layup made it 15-14 Talladega with 11:52 left and sparked a 10-2 run to put the Tornadoes in front, 23-16. Rust was able to make it a 26-23 game, but the Talladega defense allowed just six points after that and the Talladega offense took over to give the Tornadoes a 37-29 lead going into halftime.

Sam Lamont got the scoring started in the second half when he slammed down a dunk with a little over two and a half minutes into the half to push the Talladega lead to ten. Rust attempted to chip away at the lead but couldn't get the lead any lower than seven. For most of the half, the Tornadoes kept the lead to double figures getting it as high as 14 points before going on to win, 62-51.
The Tornadoes owned the glass as they finished with 43 rebounds to Rust's 25.

Corey Sands and Lamont each finished with a team-high 11 points for Talladega. Both finished with four field goals made. Sands grabbed six boards in the process.

Wilfred Campbell tallied 10 points while going 5-of-6 from the line and registering seven rebounds. Teammate D'Andre Boyd led the team in boards with eight while posting six points.

Talladega is back home on Thursday when it hosts Morehouse College at 7 p.m.
