Women’s Basketball Fall at Rust, 68-46

HOLLY SPRINGS, Miss. – The Talladega College women's basketball team battled early, but the Rust College Bearcats pulled away to collect a 68-46 victory Saturday evening in the Kinzell Lawson Gym in Gulf Coast Athletic Conference action.

Arieonna Booker had a tremendous performance for the Tornadoes (5-10, 2-4 GCAC) with 18 points, four rebounds, an assist, and a steal. Kiersten Usher and Brooklynn Talton led on the boards with six rebounds each.

After a Rust layup (15-3, 7-1 GCAC) to take the lead, Amayla Sharif splashed a three-pointer and Booker hit a pair of free throws to take a brief 5-2 advantage at the 7:37 mark. However, the lead was short lived as the Bearcats went on a quick run to go up 8-5.

Booker tied the game at 8-8 with 5:29 left in the first with another three-point shot. Karyn Ford hit two free throws to help Rust reclaim the lead at 10-8 just seconds later. Makayla Arnold tied the contest once more, 10-10, with a layup at 4:07. Booker hit another jumper in the paint to put Dega up 12-10.

Unfortunately, the lead changed for the final time with 38 seconds on a layup and free throw by Amelya Hatch to put the Bearcats on top 14-12. Rust added a free throw to end the first up 15-12.

The Bearcats outscored Dega 21-8 in the second and took a 36-20 lead to the locker room. Talladega and Rust played closer in both the third and fourth quarters, but the Bearcats won each one 20-17 and 12-9 respectively to capture the 68-46 victory.

Niya McGuire led a trio of Bearcats with 14 points, Musharapha Alhassan scored 13 points, and Diamond Sweats had 11 points.

Talladega College returns to action Tuesday in the Dr. Billy C. Hawkins Student Activity Center against Oakwood University at 5 p.m.
