TALLADEGA, Ala. – The Talladega College women's volleyball team swept a pair of home matches today when it defeated Wiley College 3-0 (25-10, 25-16, 25-18) and Clark Atlanta 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 25-13). The Tornadoes improved to 11-6, 1-0 GCAC on the season.
Talladega is back in action this weekend when it travels to Nashville to face Philander Smith College at 3 p.m. and Fisk University at 5 p.m.
Match One: Talladega 3, Wiley 0
Talladega jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the opening set but Wiley (1-7, 1-2 GCAC) scored the next three points to trail by one. Both teams traded the next two points with the Tornadoes holding the one-point advantage before going on an 8-1 run to take a 13-5 lead. Talladega closed out the set on a 12-5 run to win 25-10 and take a 1-0 lead in the match.
With both teams tied at 5-5 in set two, Talladega took a 14-7 following a 9-2 run. The Tornadoes put the match out of reach when they took a 20-10 lead. Wiley came within eight points after a 4-2 run of its own as it was the closest the team would get. The Tornadoes closed out the set to win 25-16 and take a 2-0 lead.
The Tornadoes took an early 8-3 lead in set three looking to close the match out, but Wiley was able to use a 5-1 run to trail, 9-8. Both teams traded points for a while with Talladega holding the edge 16-15 in the set. The Tornadoes went on the score the next four points straight to lead 20-15, but Wiley answered by scoring back-to-back points to make it, 20-17. Talladega closed out the set and match on a 5-1 run to win 25-18 and take the match, 3-0.
As a team, Talladega hit .337 for the match with a set-high .520 in set one.
Talladega's Prettie Zyaire Garrit finished with a team-high in kills with 17 on 23 attacks while hitting a match-high .739.
Giovana Costarelli paced the Tornadoes with 18 assists while teammate
Nuria Santos tallied 10.
Briyith Echeverri paced all players for both teams with 13 digs.
Match Two: Talladega 3, Clark Atlanta 0
Tied at six in set one, Talladega used a 7-2 run to take a 13-8 lead. The Tornadoes built off their lead to go up, 23-16. Talladega's strong performance allowed them to take the set 25-19 and go up 1-0 in the match.
Talladega opened up set two leading 5-2, but Clark Atlanta (3-4) scored the next three points to tie the set at five. Both teams went back and forth with the Tornadoes holding a slim 10- 8 lead. The slim lead held even after Clark Atlanta scored four points but so did Talladega to lead, 15-12. Clark Atlanta scored the next three points in a row to tie the set at 15, but the Tornadoes scored the next two points to reclaim the lead and make it, 17-15. The match would end with Talladega using an 8-6 run to win 25-21 and lead 2-0 in the match.
Leading 6-2 in set three, Talladega looked to close out the set, but Clark Atlanta attempted to chip away at the lead to trail, 8-5. The Tornadoes broke the set open with an 8-3 run and took a 16-8 lead, but Clark Atlanta tried for a second time to get back into the set as it used a 4-2 run to trail 18-12. That was Clark Atlanta's last attempt before Talladega went on to win 25-13 and win the set and match.
Nedu Evans' nine attacks paced Talladega while Echeverri recorded 13 digs for a second straight match. Teammate Costarelli finished with 16 assists and a team-high two aces.
