Tornadoes Prevail in Straight Sets over Philander Smith

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – The Talladega College women's volleyball team claimed the first win in the LaShaunda Spurgeon era with a 3-0 (25-19, 27-25, 25-23), straight-set sweep over Philander Smith in Mimms Gym Friday night.
 
The win did not come easy, and almost moved to a fourth set. However, a pair of kills from Re'na Ashley and a combination block from Nedu Evans and Taquoia Rounds helped put the game on ice for the Tornadoes (1-1).
 
Zyaire Prettie Garrit and Ashley both finished with eight kills to lead Dega. Ashley posted a .319 attack percentage off 19 total attacks. Giovana Costarelli and Dominique Madarang each passed 14 assists to move the offense, while Garrit and Rounds smashed three service aces.
 
Kenya Glenn led the back row with 11 digs, and Rounds also crossed double-digit digs with 10. Evans and Ashley dominated the net as Ashley had three solo blocks and three block assists, and Evans came away with four block assists and two solo blocks.
 
Maya Jones led the Panthers (0-1) with seven kills and nine digs. Karissa Maldonado added seven assists, and Essence Wren passed six assists.
 
The Philander Smith Classic continues tomorrow, with Talladega College set to take on Texas A&M-Texarkana at 12:30 p.m. and Harris-Stowe State at 3 p.m.
