Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Tornadoes Wrap Second Day of Panther Classic

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – The Talladega College women's volleyball team dropped a pair of doubleheader matches to conclude the Philander Smith Panther Classic Saturday afternoon in Mims Gymnasium.

A high-scoring affair did not go the way of the Talladega College women's volleyball team as Texas A&M-Texarkana Eagles rallied from two sets down to grab a 3-2 win (30-32, 22-25, 25-22, 25-15, 15-11) in a five-set thriller.

The match opened with a 42-point set. A&M went up 24-19 in the first game before a kill from Kiana Polk, a pair of Eagle errors, and a service ace from Nedu Evans tied the set at 23-23. Back-to-back attack errors by both teams moved the opener to 24-24. Neither team could push ahead until the Eagles went ahead 30-29. A service error and an attack error by Texarkana gave Dega (1-3) the 31-30 advantage, and Polk put the set away with a kill for the 1-0 match lead.

A&M took control in the third set after a rally from down 21-19 to win the game 25-22. From there, the Eagles maintained control and never trailed on the way to complete the comeback victory.

Josephine Gates led the attack for Dega with 14 kills. Polk came behind her with 12 kills, and Evans reached double-digits with 10. Giovana Costarelli passed 26 assists, and Dominique Madarang added 23 assists. Both setters had double-doubles as Costarelli had 11 digs and Madarang amassed 10.

Kenya Glenn posted 24 digs to lead the back row, and Taquoia Rounds finished with 15. Evans led the front row with three block assists and two solo blocks.

Mia Mata posted a double-double for Texarkana with 12 kills and 16 digs, while Kelby Coutee added 10 kills. Zuleica Cruz passed 18 assists, and Kimberly Joyce added 13 passes for scores. Madison Arrieta led the back row with 17 digs.

The second contest of the day was more of a back-and-forth, but the Harris-Stowe University Hornets came away with the win in another five-set match (22-25, 25-16, 25-22, 22-25, 15-13) for the Tornadoes.

Dega won the opening game before dropping sets two and three. The Tornadoes then picked up a win to force a deciding fifth set but fell two points shy of claiming a tournament-ending victory.

Evans blasted 15 kills and aided defensively with five block assists. Re'na Ashley and Polk both posted 10 kills. Costarelli passed 32 assists and collected 10 digs on the defensive effort.

Glenn led the back row with 29 rounds, Rounds had 12, and Dyani Steward nabbed 11 digs.
Jayden Sortor paced the Hornets with 15 kills, and Isa Smith passed 23 assists.

Next up for Talladega College is a road trip to face in-state rival Stillman College, set for a 6 p.m. start on Aug. 30.
