WALESKA, Ga. – The Talladega College women's volleyball team faced a tough challenge and took a season-opening loss to the Reinhardt University Eagles Saturday morning in the Brown Athletic Center. RU won in straight sets, 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-18).

As a unit, the Tornadoes put up a .141 attack percentage with 29 kills, 28 assists, and four service aces in LaShaunda Spurgeon's debut as Talladega's head coach.

"It was a good first match of the season. We're a new team that's still learning and adjusting to one another with a few players that could be key for us this season missing this weekend (Dominique Madarang, Taquoia Rounds, Briyith Echeverri and Nedu Evans). We've been playing well, and we've set up a good foundation. I'm happy with the way my team was working. We've got some work to do, but I'm really excited about the continued growth in this group," Spurgeon said. "We've seen a lot of good things so far, but it's very early. We're going to make improvements over the course of the week, and we'll be better each weekend."

Allison Selway had nine kills for Reinhardt, Ashlynn Barnes passed 30 assists, while Sarah Sweet led the back row with 17 digs.

Talladega College will return to action on Aug. 25 as part of the Philander Smith College Classic Tournament in Little Rock, Arkansas. The Tornadoes will meet Harris Stowe University on Friday at 2:30 p.m. and Texas A&M University Texarkana at 7 p.m. On Aug. 26, the Tornadoes play Philander Smith at 10 a.m., followed by Freed-Hardeman University at 12:30 p.m.
