Oropeza Grand Slam Lifts Dega over BMC

TALLADEGA, Ala.Miguel Oropeza posted six RBIs for the Talladega College baseball team Thursday afternoon, including a grand slam to lift the Tornadoes over Blue Mountain Christian University to open their Southern States Athletic Conference series.

Dega (19-10-1, 9-3 SSAC) started with a dominant lead by scoring three runs in the second. Nomar Garcia registered the first RBI of the contest with a single to left field to knock in Oropeza. Jesuette Dominguez trotted home after Andres Puello drew a bases-loaded walk, and Darlin Fernandez capped the inning with an RBI to drive in Garcia and put the team up 3-0.

The Tornadoes added more runs after Oropeza hit his first homer of the day to left field for two RBIs as Joelvin Dilone scored on the play in the third. Fernandez smashed an RBI double to left field in the fourth to drive in Puello.

However, Blue Mountain Christian (21-12, 6-7 SSAC) did not go quietly and started to creep back into the game with a run in the sixth and another in the eighth. The big explosion came in the ninth with a three-run homer by Austin Beech and a two-run shot to left field by Easton Rainer to tie the matchup at 6-6.

Jose Santiago, Dilone and Fernandez worked their way on base in the bottom of the ninth to set the stage for Oropeza to blast the game-winning grand slam, which secured the 10-6 win in the series opener.

Oropeza finished 3-for-4 with six RBIs, three runs scored, two home runs, and a walk to serve as the batting leader for Dega.

Juan Peña (2-1) was in the right place at the right time and earned the win after recording a strikeout. Jose Franco started and went five innings and posted five strikeouts. Ramses Ortega (three innings) and Oliver Cruz (0.2 innings) also appeared on the mound.

Talladega College, winners of five straight, and Blue Mountain Christian resume the series tomorrow with a doubleheader starting at noon.
