Tornadoes Fall in 2OT Thriller to MGA, 76-70

TALLADEGA, Ala. – The paying patrons of the Dr. Billy C. Hawkins Student Activity Center received their money's worth tonight but did not get the desired result. The Talladega College women's basketball team dropped a grueling game in double overtime to the Middle Georgia State University Lady Knights 76-70 Tuesday night in Southern States Athletic Conference action.
 
Middle Georgia (8-12, 5-10 SSAC) had to come from behind to force the two extra frames as the Lady Knights trailed 32-27 entering the second half. The lead for Talladega (5-17, 0-16 SSAC) grew to nine points following a tip-in from Amir Brown with a little over eight minutes left in the third quarter. The Tornadoes stalled at 38 points for three minutes of game action, which allowed MGA to cut the lead to three points at Ashley McKee connected on a layup.
 
Dega battled to push the lead back to six following free throws with about two minutes left in the period, but the Lady Knights ended the quarter with momentum following free throws from Kassidy Broussard that cut the score to 43-40.
 
In the fourth, Broussard hit the shot to give MGA the team's first lead since there were three seconds remaining in the first at 45-43. Je'Nya Wilder quickly retied the game. Lashauna Coley seeming put the game away with a three late in the fourth to put the Lady Knights ahead 54-52. It wasn't until 40 seconds remaining when Makayla Transou hit a jumper to tie the game 54-54 and force overtime.
 
Both teams only scored 10 points in the first overtime, but the significant action happened in the final seconds. After a Brooklyn Talton tip-in tied the contest at 62-62, Transou committed a foul with six seconds left. Destanee Wright hit one of two free throws to put MGA up by one. Transou missed the game-winning jumper, and possession went to Middle Georgia with two seconds left. Amayla Sharif could Broussard, but during the contact, Broussard received a technical foul with no time left. Broussard hit one of two shots at the line, but Katernia Patkova hit both of her technical free throws to force double overtime with the game tied 64-64.
 
Amya Walker hit a free throw hit a free throw to start the second overtime and put Dega up 65-64; however, the game was firmly in the hands of the Lady Knights from here. McKee hit a layup and started a push to a six-point lead for MGA. Dega came within three points twice, with the last gasp coming at 1:16 to go after a jumper from Patkova. However, the Lady Knights used free throws to secure the 76-70 win.
 
Four players scored double figures for Dega, led by Loman, who turned in 12 points and 12 rebounds. Bryabba Williams and Shariff scored 11, and Transou posted 10 points, eight assists, and seven steals. Talton also secured double-digit boards with 11 rebounds and scored nine points.  
 
Broussard and Wright scored 16 for MGA, and Coley rounded a trio of players in double figures with 12 points.
 
Talladega College hosts Stillman College on Feb. 11 in SSAC action. Tip-off is set for noon in the Dr. Billy C. Hawkins Student Activity Center
