Dega Falters Late in Loss to Stillman

TALLADEGA, Ala. – The in-state rivals did battle in Southern States Athletic Conference action Saturday afternoon, but in the end, the Talladega College women's basketball team took a 62-47 loss to the Stillman College Tigers in the Dr. Billy C. Hawkins Student Activity Center.

The back-and-forth affair featured nine lead changes and five ties. The Tornadoes (5-18, 0-17 SSAC) struck first with a jumper for two by Amalya Sharif on the team's first possession. Stillman (15-11, 7-9 SSAC) responded with a tip-in after a missed shot as Kelcie Smith put the first two points on the board for the Tigers.

Leneja Warner hit a pair of free throws on the next possession to put the visitors up 4-2. However, Makayla Transou connected from three to reclaim the advantage for Dega at 5-4 just under two minutes into the opening quarter. Scoring slowed significantly in the period as the only other points for either team in the first came from the charity stripe, but Talladega found a path to a 12-6 lead after 10 minutes of play.

Early portions of the second quarter belonged to the Tornadoes as the team built a seven-point lead following a three-pointer by Sharif with 5:05 remaining in the half to move the score to 20-13. Stillman's offense woke up and countered with a 12-4 run over the next four minutes of game time, capped by a layup from Jamesha King to put the Tigers up 25-24.

Brooklyn Talton tipped in an offensive rebound as time expired in the second quarter to give the Tornadoes a 26-25 halftime advantage.

The third quarter was a wild one with nine lead changes and ties, but both teams scored 15 points thanks to another quarter-ending tip-in for Dega as Je'Nya Wilder put the team on top 41-40.

Unfortunately, the Tornadoes' offense couldn't match the output from Stillman in the fourth. Warner hit a three to open the final frame to put the Tigers up 43-41. Transou answered with a bucket to tie the matchup 43-43. The shot from Transou served as the last gasp for the Dega attack as Stillman outscored the Tornadoes 19-4 for the remainder of the quarter to hand Talladega a 62-47 defeat.

Shamya Loman and Transou scored 13 points to lead Dega, while Sharif finished just below double figures with nine. Wilder pulled down 10 rebounds and added two assists and two points.

Alexandria Haymon led the way for Stillman as she amassed 22 points and six rebounds in 24 minutes off the bench.

Talladega College hots Faulkner University in the regular season finale at the Dr. Hawkins Student Activity Center on Feb. 16. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. for the SSAC contest. The Tornadoes close the regular season Saturday, Feb. 18, in a rematch with Stillman College in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
