Women’s Hoops Falls in Home Finale to Faulkner

TALLADEGA, Ala. – In the last home contest of the season for the Talladega College women's basketball team, the Tornadoes took a tough 62-47 loss to the Faulkner University Lady Eagles Friday afternoon in Southern States Athletic Conference action.

For the most part, Faulkner (22-6, 14-4 SSAC) firmly controlled the game. The Lady Eagles jumped to a 3-0 lead when Nequoia Adams hit a three on the team's first possession. Talladega (5-19, 0-18 SSAC) scored around two minutes later when Makayla Transou started an 8-0 run with consecutive three-pointers and an assist on a layup by Shamya Loman to put Dega up 8-3.

Eviah Burrows ended the Tornadoes' scoring run with a shot from behind the arc with 6:48 on the first quarter clock. Adams followed with her second three of the game and put Faulkner up 9-8 for the game's final lead change. Talladega only scored four more points in the first, and Faulkner built to a 16-point, 28-12 lead after a quarter.

In the second, the Lady Eagles built as much as a 21-point lead following a layup from Angela Great at the 6:10 mark. However, Dega did not go down quietly and cut the lead to seven points when Je'Nya Wilder connected on a layup with 1:47 before halftime to bring the score to 39-32. Morgan Holland hit the last points of the quarter with two free throws 30 seconds later to send Faulkner to half with a 41-32 lead.

Dega's offense did not get much going to start the second half and was limited to just four points in the third, while Faulkner tallied 13. Because of limited offense, the Tornadoes trailed 54-36 after three quarters. The fourth played favorably for Dega as the team won the period 11-8, but the Lady Eagles handled business enough to come away with a 15-point, 62-47 win in the Dr. Billy C. Hawkins Student Activity Center.

Transou turned in a quality performance for Dega with a game-leading 15 points alongside nine rebounds, seven assists, two blocks, and a steal. Wilder and Loman both tallied nine points, while Talton matched Transou on the boards with nine rebounds.

Angela Grant scored 14 points to lead Faulkner, but Holland turned in a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Neely Jones and Adams both scored 11 points as well.

Talladega College hits the road for the team's regular-season finale tomorrow against Stillman College. Tip-off in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, is set for noon in Birthright Alumni Hall.
