Dega Offense Powers Second Half Comeback over Knights, 74-67

TALLADEGA, Ala. – The Talladega College men's basketball team saw an offensive explosion in the second half, which fueled a 74-67 win over Middle Georgia State University Knights Tuesday night in Southern States Athletic Conference competition.

Free throws accounted for the first points of the game for both teams. Pierles Brown was fouled on a three-pointer and hit all three free throws to put MGA (10-13, 6-11 SSAC) on the board. On the next possession, Jordan Crumbley was fouled and hit two free throws for Talladega (10-15, 4-13 SSAC), bringing the team within a point. Another Dega foul allowed Brown to go to the line for two more free throws to move the score to 5-2 with 18:42 on the clock.

Ethelbert Anum scored the first bucket of the game and later hit a free throw to tie the game 5-5. Brice Martin hit a free throw to reclaim the lead for the Knights, but two jumpers from Javon Tatum gave the Tornadoes a 9-6 lead.

Jayce Moore finally scored the first points from the field on a tip-in with 10:26 left in the half to bring MGA within a point. However, back-to-back threes by the Knights allowed the visitors to take the lead and quickly push it to eight points following another three-pointer by N'Kyzie Hawkins. The slight lead did not last as threes by Corey Sands, and Wilfred Campbell IV closed the Middle Georgia advantage to 26-24 heading to the half.

Crumbley used the first possession of the second half for Talladega to put the team back ahead thanks to a three-ball. The Tornadoes steadily built a six-point advantage with 17 minutes to go but saw the lead disappear over the next four minutes of game action when Hawkins hit a three to give MGA a 43-41 lead.

The teams battled to a 50-50 tie with 9:44 left in the game until Tatum connected on a three-pointer to give Dega a lead the team never relinquished again. Talladega built a 10-point lead on several occasions in the half before settling on a seven-point, 74-67 win over Middle Georgia.

Sands led the way for the Tornadoes with 18 points and eight rebounds. Tatum posted 17 points, while Anum turned in 16 points and nine rebounds.

Dega finished 58.1 percent (25-of-43) from the floor, 50 percent (9-of-18) beyond the arc, and 68.2 percent (15-of-22) at the line.

Hawkins scored 14 to lead the Knights, DJ Hutchins and Brown scored 12, and Jayce Moore contributed 10 points.
