Dega Pulls Away from DSC in Road Win

DALTON, Ga. – A strong and steady second half allowed the Talladega College men's basketball team to put down the Dalton State College Roadrunners 62-55 Saturday afternoon in Southern States Athletic Conference competition.
 
The Roadrunners (15-11, 10-8 SSAC) controlled the early portions of the matchup and scored the first five points of the matchup. Corey Sands provided the first points for the Tornadoes (11-15, 5-13 SSAC) at the 15:44 mark to cut the score to 5-2 on a jumper. Boubacar Kamissoko pushed the DSC lead to seven points, 11-4, with a jumper in the paint at 12:38 in the first.
 
Dega's offense powered up over the next two minutes with an 8-2 run to close the gap to 14-12 following a three-pointer by Wilfred Campbell IV. Dalton State pushed the lead to seven points once more with five minutes left after Franklin Almonte hit a shot to score 21-14. However, the Tornadoes took control with an 11-2 run capped by a jumper by Sands in the paint to send Dega to the locker room with a 26-23 advantage and the team's first lead of the game.
 
The first lead change was the only one of the game, as the Tornadoes never trailed again. Donavan Miller hit a jumper for Dalton State to bring the Roadrunners within one at 26-25. Ethelbert Anum responded with a two-pointer to extend the lead back to three points.
 
Anum extended the lead to 12 points with a jumper to give Dega a 42-30 advantage with 11:38 remaining in the game. Over the next 10 minutes, DSC cut the deficit down to three points once more following free throws by Almonte to move the score to 55-52. The three points were as close as the Roadrunners came because Dega put DSC away with a 10-3 run to close the contest and leave Georgia with a 62-55 victory.
 
Four players scored in double figures for Talladega, led by 18 points and seven rebounds from Anum. Sands had a phenomenal effort with 17 points, nine rebounds, six assists and two steals. Jevon Tatum added 12 points, while Campbell posted 10 points and seven assists.
 
Almonte finished with 13 points, and Donavan Miller had 11 points to lead Dalton State.
 
Talladega College hots Faulkner University in the regular season finale at the Dr. Hawkins Student Activity Center on Feb. 16. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. for the SSAC contest. The Tornadoes close the regular season Saturday, Feb. 18, in a rematch with Stillman College in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. The Tigers came to Dega and won 69-62 back on Nov. 19.
