Second-Half Woes Plague Tornadoes in Loss to Eagles

TALLADEGA, Ala. – A first-half lead for the Talladega College men's basketball team gave way to a comeback for the visiting Faulkner University Eagles and led to a 61-46 loss Friday afternoon in Southern States Athletic Conference action.

In the first minute, CJ Hines started the party early for Faulkner (24-4, 16-4 SSAC) with a three-pointer. Talladega (11-16, 5-14 SSAC) finally scored at the 17:45 mark when Tre Simmons splashed a three to tie the game.

The Eagles took control for a spell with an 11-2 run capped by a layup by Hines to push the score to 14-5 with 13:20 on the clock. Dega then went on a run, and the team posted a 24-2 run over the next 11 minutes of game action to take a 13-point lead after Ethelbert Anum hit a free throw to move the score to 29-16.

However, Faulkner took the momentum to halftime thanks to a 7-0 run over the final two minutes of the first half and trailed 29-23 heading to the break.

The visiting Eagles slowly whittled down the lead over the first four minutes of the second half and battled to a 32-32 tie following a three by Jonathan Garcia. Anum hit a pair of free throws to regain the lead briefly, but Isiah Brooks responded with two shots from the charity stripe to re-tie the game at 34-34. Hines gave Faulkner the team's first lead since late in the first half with two free throws, and Corey Sands continued the back-and-forth with a couple of shots from the line to move the score to 36-36.

Garcia ended the free throw party with a three-pointer at the 13:08 mark in the second half, which gave Faulkner the final lead change of the matchup. Dega came within two points with 9:53 remaining in the game after a free throw from Anum, but the Eagles steadily increased the lead down the stretch to a 61-46 win to spoil the final home game of the season for Talladega.

Sands led the Tornadoes with 15 points and seven rebounds, while Anum posted 11 points and six rebounds.

CJ Hines led all scorers with 24 points, seven assists, six rebounds, and three assists. Brooks and Garcia both added 11 points.

Talladega College hits the road for the team's regular-season finale tomorrow against Stillman College. Tip-off in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, is scheduled for 2 p.m. in Birthright Alumni Hall.
