Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Dega Plays Spoiler in Win over Stillman

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The Talladega College men's basketball team closed its regular season in the best way possible Saturday afternoon, knocking off Stillman College, 60-53, in a Southern States Athletic Conference game at Birthright Alumni Hall to spoil the Tigers' Senior Day and Homecoming festivities.

The win is the Tornadoes' third in their last four games and Talladega (12-16, 6-14) is now 4-2 since a seven-game losing streak in midseason. Talladega now turns its attention to the SSAC Tournament, which gets under way Wednesday at the Multiplex at Cramton Bowl in Montgomery, Ala. Talladega is the No. 9 seed in the tournament and faces eighth-seeded  Middle Georgia (11-15, 7-13) in the opening round Wednesday at 10:45 a.m. Tickets are only being sold online at https://ssacsports.com/tickets and if you can't attend in person, you can watch a stream of the game at https://ssacsports.tv.

Saturday's game was back and forth in the first half before back-to-back 3-pointers by Wilfred Campbell IV and Javon Tatum allowed the Tornadoes to build a small 26-21 lead with 2:29 to go before halftime. Talladega led by as many as seven before a late 3-pointer by the Tigers' Khalil Johnson got Stillman back to within 31-27 at the break.

Another 3-pointer by Johnson gave Stillman a 37-35 with 15:36 to go in the game before both teams went cold, failing to score for the next three-plus minutes. Finally, Tatum drained another 3-pointer to make it 38-37 Tornadoes with 12:33 remaining. The teams continued to go back-and-forth and Stillman (15-13, 11-9) led 49-46 with 5:08 to go after a layup by Jamar Jackson, but the Tigers were unable to land a knockout punch and Talladega made a rally of its own that would allow the Tornadoes to prevail.

Jordan Crumbley made a layup with 1:49 remaining to put Talladega up, 54-53, and that put the Tornadoes ahead for good. After a turnover by Stillman, Tatum made a basket to push the lead to 56-53 with 1:05 left and Campbell and Crumbley each made a pair of free throws in the final 38 seconds to salt away the win for the Tornadoes.

Tatum came off the bench to lead Talladega with 22 points, four rebounds and two steals. Campbell added 16 points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals and Anum Ethelbert chipped in 11 points and six rebounds for the Tornadoes.

Johnson was the high scorer for Stillman with 16 points, three rebounds and two blocked shots. Jackson had 13 and Devin Merriweather scored 10 points for the Tigers in the loss.
