Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Dega Season Concludes with a Loss to MGA

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Talladega College men's basketball team could not overcome a slow start and fell in the opening round of the Southern States Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Tournament to the Middle Georgia State University Knights Tuesday morning. The Tornadoes took a 64-51 loss at the Multiplex at the Crampton Bowl.

Brice Martin scored the first five points of the game for MGA (12-15) thanks to a made jumper and a successful layup and free throw after being fouled during the layup attempt. Talladega (12-17) finally scored at the 16:41 mark with a layup from Corey Sands, and Ethelbert Anum hit a free throw to cut the lead to 5-3.

The Knights responded with a 10-2 run, which provided enough separation for the team to ride for the remainder of the first half as Dega spent most of the first half trailing by double-digits.

With 5:36 left in the first half, Sands converted an old-school three-point play after hitting a layup and draining a free throw to cut MGA's lead to 24-15. However, Brice Martin hit a layup on the next possession for Middle Georgia and gave the Knights an 11-point advantage. MGA built to a 17-point, 39-22 halftime lead.

Talladega came within at least seven points twice in the second half. The first came with 12:19 remaining when Javon Tatum connected on a layup to bring the tally to 43-35. Then with 10:15 until the final buzzer, the Tornadoes cut the deficit to 47-40 following a three-pointer from Jordan Crumbley. After Maliek Sadler hit a three to put Middle Georgia up 11 points,  Anum converted a layup with 7:37 left to close the gap to 51-49. Unfortunately, the lead never came within single digits after this point, and Middle Georgia went on to claim a 64-51 win and advance to the SSAC Tournament quarter-finals.

Jevon Tatum came off the bench to lead all scorers with 16 points. Crumbley posted 12 points and a team-leading eight rebounds; Sands scored 11 points, and Anum added 10 points.

Martin posted a double-double for MGA with 15 points and 11 rebounds, while Pierles Brown scored 15. Sadler added 14 points to round out double-digit scorers for the Knights.
