TALLADEGA, Ala. - Headed to the bottom of the second inning on Tuesday afternoon, the Talladega College Tornadoes trailed the Golden Tigers of Tuskegee University 3-1. From that point forward, the Tornadoes controlled the rest of the afternoon.
Talladega (4-0) rattled off 18 unanswered runs in its final five trips to the plate, as it rallied to down Tuskegee (1-2), 19-3.
Things really got rolling for the Tornadoes in the second inning. With Tuskegee leading 3-1 and one away,
Jesuette Dominguez blasted a solo home run to left field to pull the Tornadoes within one, but a strikeout followed and Talladega had two outs with the bases empty. That is when the merry-go-round engaged. The next eight Talladega hitters all reached base, and the inning was highlighted by RBI doubles from
Miguel Oropeza and
Armando Jackson, as well as a two-RBI single from
Rafael Diaz. When the dust had settled, 12 men had come to the plate in the frame, eight runs had scored, and Talladea held the lead 9-3.
Jackson launched a grand slam in the bottom of the third - the Tornadoes' second grand slam so far this season. Talladega plated two more runs in the fourth on a double from Oropeza, and they pushed across four more in the sixth when
Jaiden Cartwright,
Luis Cardona, and
Nomar Garcia all notched RBIs.Â
Winston Garcia (1-0) scattered three hits and two walks in five and two-thirds innings of scoreless relief, and he struck out seven in earning the victory. Jeremy Hawkins (0-1) lasted only an inning and a third for Tuskegee, and he was touched up for seven earned runs on seven hits, four walks and two strikeouts in the loss.
Jackson finished the game 3-for-3 with the grand slam, a double, and six RBIs; and Oropeza doubled twice, was 4-for-4 with three runs scored and four driven in.
Wander Arias drew three walks and scored three times, and Dominguez was 2-for-2 with a pair of runs scored.
Talladega pounded out 17 hits in the game - seven of which went for extra bases.
The Tornadoes will return to action on Friday and Saturday as they continue their 11-game home stand to open the season. Talladega will host Florida National University (0-0) for a pair of double headers which are both slated to begin at 11:30 a.m.
