Dega Falls to #10 Wolfpack, 79-51

TALLADEGA, Ala. – The Talladega College women's basketball team struggled to keep pace with the Loyola University Wolf Pack as the tenth-ranked team in the nation pushed to a 79-51 victory Saturday afternoon in Southern States Athletic Conference action.

The high-powered Wolf Pack (21-1, 14-1) scored first in the game with a layup from Sandra Cannady. Amayla Shariff scored the next time down the court after two offensive rebounds by the Tornadoes (5-16, 0-15). Kennedy Hansberry added three straight points before Makayla Transou answered with a layup to cut the Wolf Pack lead to 5-4. Transou followed with a steal and another layup to give Dega the team's only lead of the game at 6-5.

Liz Critton connected on a layup to put Loyola up 7-6 as the team went on an 18-6 run for the remainder of the first to take a 23-12 lead after the opening quarter of play.

Talladega's second quarter did not go well as the Wolf Pack held Talladega to nine points and 31.4 percent (3-of-14) from the floor. Meanwhile, Loyola only hit seven shots from the floor, but four of the made baskets were from three-point territory. The Wolf Pack also connected on 8-of-9 free throws on the way to a 20-point effort in the period on the way to a 43-21 lead at the half.

Amya Walker and Transou combined to do some heavy lifting for the Dega offense to start the second half, as the pair scored 13 of the team's 15 points in the third quarter. Transou posted seven points, while Walker scored the other six. Despite the efforts from the two offensively, Loyola reached the 20-point threshold for the third time with 21 points to take a 64-36 lead to the fourth.

Transou shined again in the fourth quarter and scored nine points in the final frame. Both teams scored 15 points in the last 10 minutes of game action, but the Wolf Pack did the work early to come away with a 79-51 road win.

Dega's Transou led all scorers with 23 points and added five rebounds, three blocks and a pair of steals. Brooklyn Talton dominated on the boards for the Tornadoes and posted a game-leading 12 rebounds.
