Dega Falls Short in Upset Bid over #15 Loyola

TALLADEGA, Ala. – A second-half run for the Loyola University New Orleans Wolf Pack provided just enough separation to defeat the Talladega College men's basketball team Saturday evening 63-59 in Southern States Athletic Conference action.

Milan Mejia wasted no time getting the Wolf Pack (19-4, 14-2 SSAC) on the board with a three-pointer just 18 seconds after tip-off. Likewise, the Tornadoes' (9-15, 3-13 SSAC) response was just as swift when Ethelbert Anum put in a layup on Dega's first possession. Jordan Crumbley later hit a layup to give Talladega a 4-3 lead.

Michael Harden regained the advantage for a minute of gameplay in favor of Loyola; however, Anum went on a personal 6-0 run thanks to two successful free throws and a pair of made layups which put the Tornadoes up 10-5. Crumbley took the team's scoring run the rest of the way and helped Dega build a 15-5 lead thanks to converting an old-school three-point play and a layup on consecutive possessions.

The consecutive point run ended with a free throw from Zach Muller and a layup from Meija, but Talladega pushed the back to 10 points at 18-8 on a made three from Tre Simmons with 11:37 to go in the first half.

The climax of the first half for the Tornadoes came with just under five minutes remaining when Corey Sands hit a three to put the team up 27-17. The bucket served as the last points of the period for Dega as Loyola closed the opening frame on an 11-0 run capped by a three-pointer from Harden to take a 28-27 lead to the locker room.

In a repeat of the first half, the Wolf Pack scored quickly on a layup by Matthew Mondesir. This time the Tornadoes only responded with just over 17 minutes on the game clock to come within a point at 30-29 off a Simmons jumper. The margin was the closest Dega would be again as Loyola built a 10-point lead to 43-33 with 14:49 left.

Dega put up one last comeback attempt and used a 7-2 run to close the gap to 45-40 following a fast-break layup by Devan Nichols. Loyola responded by building a 12-point lead capped by a three from Leonard Jackson. The Wolfpack slowed down the tempo, and Dega whittled down the lead one more time to five points after a layup from Anum. However, time ran out for Dega, and the Wolf Pack held on for the 63-59 victory.

Anum posted a double-double for Talladega with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Nichols turned in 12 points in just 11 minutes of action.

Mondesir led the way for Loyola with 12 points, and Mejia scored 11.

Talladega College returns to action on Feb. 7 against Middle Georgia State University. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the Dr. Billy C. Hawkins Student Activity Center.
