Tornadoes Win 2023 Baseball Opener

HOOVER, Ala. - Four Tornadoes delivered multiple hits Friday to help Talladega College to an 8-7 victory over Thomas University in its 2023 Baseball season opener at the Hoover Metropolitan Complex.

Jesuette Dominguez drove in the first run of the season with a two-out double in the second inning to plate Nomar Gracia.

Miguel Oropeza led Talladega with a 3-for-4 day at the plate, including an RBI double in the second inning. He also scored on a Jose Santiago double in the inning to lead 3-0.

While the Thomas Nighthawks answered with a three-run top of the fourth, Isaac Guzman singled in a run and later scored on an error in the bottom of the fourth to regan Dega's lead, 5-3.

Thomas once again evened the score in the fifth, but Garcia broke the tie in the bottom of the inning with a sac bunt RBI, followed by a Dominguez RBI to left to score Jaquan Nieves. Guzman then reached on an error to score Darlin Fernandez for the eventual winning run.

With the lead regained, Jose Franco (1-0) exited the game in the top of the sixth to record his first win of the season. He allowed three earned runs off five hits and one walk, while striking out seven of 23 batters faced. Alex Friesen (0-1) took the loss for Thomas, giving up four earned runs, seven total, off eight hits, two walks and a hit batter through four-plus innings.

Though the Tornadoes left two stranded on base in both the sixth and seventh innings, Dega sustained its lead into the ninth inning.

Thomas worked the bases loaded and walked in a run before Luis Rodriguez-Gallo hit a sac fly to make it a one-run game, 8-7, with one out. Beau Neely took over on the mound and earned his first save with a lineout double play to Jose Santiago at first base.

Wander Arias, Dominguez and Fernandez each had two hits in the game, while Guzman, Santiago and Garcia each had one hit.

Dega finished the day with 12 total hits and four walks.

Both teams return to action Saturday for an 11 a.m. doubleheader in Talladega's home opener.
