Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Tornadoes Grab Win over Wesleyan

MACON, Ga. – Eleven days off provided the Talladega College women's basketball team enough time to regroup, collect a 69-48 win over the Wesleyan College Wolves in Titans Arena Saturday afternoon, and end a six-game losing streak.

Amayla Sharif led the way with 14 points, four steals, two rebounds, and an assist in 27 minutes of action. Arieonna Booker provided 13 points, five steals, two assists and two rebounds.

As a team, Talladega shot 46.2 percent (30-of-65) from the floor and 50 percent (9-of-18) from the free-throw line. The Tornadoes won despite missing all nine three-pointer attempts.

Both teams played a virtually even opening quarter until Wesleyan started to pull ahead with 2:10 on the clock courtesy of throes from Mia Walker, a pair of layups from Otashae Burrage, and another free throw from Burrage to give the Wolves a 16-12 lead after 10 minutes.

However, in the second quarter, Dega outscored Wesleyan 16-7. In another back-and-forth period, Destiny Johnson finally hit the layup to put the Tornadoes ahead 22-21 at 4:47. Johnson then hit another layup just over a minute later to push the lead to three points.

With 52 seconds until halftime, Booker connected on a layup to give Talladega a five-point, 26-21 edge, but Walker hit a shot on the next possession to cut the score to 26-23. Makayla Arnold scored the final layup of the half with eight seconds on the clock to send Dega to the locker room with a 28-23 lead.

The Tornadoes never let go of the lead in the second half and led by 11 points in the third after Sharif buried a pair of free throws to put the team ahead 45-34 with 2:37 left in the quarter. Dega took a 45-37 advantage to the fourth.

After watching the lead shrink to seven points during the fourth quarter, Talladega used some precision to win the quarter 24-11 and grab a 69-48 neutral site victory.

Mia Walker led the Wolves and all scorers with 20 points. Burrage added 14 points, and Destiny Grider posted 12 points and nine rebounds.

Talladega College returns to Gulf Coast Athletic Conference competition next Saturday with a home contest in the Dr. Billy C. Hawkins Student Activity Center against Dillard University. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
