Women’s Basketball Drops Double OT Matchup to Dillard

TALLADEGA, Ala. – Both teams battled hard in the Dr. Billy Hawkins Student Activity Center, but free throws proved to be the difference as the Talladega College women's basketball team fell to the Dillard University Bleu Devils 80-74 Saturday afternoon In Gulf Coast Athletic Conference action.
 
In the decisive second overtime, Dillard (5-8, 4-2 GCAC) connected on 7-of-9 free throws while Dega (4-8, 1-3 GCAC) only hit 1-of-2 attempts from the charity stripe. In all, the Bleu Devils outscored the Tornadoes 14-8 in the decisive period.
 
Arieonna Booker led Talladega in scoring 18 points, six assists, and six rebounds. Makayla Arnold posted a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds while adding four steals and an assist. La'Daja Caldwell and Meadow Gillispe round out a quartet of double-double scorers with 11 points each.
 
The Tornadoes held an advantage for the majority of the fourth and built as much as an eight-point, 56-48 lead after a pair of free throws from Stephanie Hubard. However, Dillard responded in a big way with a 10-0 run to take the lead with 1:22 on the clock. With 17 seconds left, Caldwell hit a layup to force OT at 58-58.
 
After a first overtime period that featured five lead changes, Arnold helped Dega build a four-point lead to go up 70-66 with 3:21 remaining.  On the next possession, Alexis Gie hit a three-pointer and Erika Diaz connected on a free throw to tie the contest at 70-70. Dillard took control from here and outscored the Tornadoes 10-4 with the aid of six successful free throws on the way to the 80-74 final.
 
Cassidy Lowe led all scorers and posted a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds alongside six steals and four assists. Sydni John-Baptist scored 17 points, while GIe and Diaz both scored 14 each.
 
Talladega College returns to action at home against NCAA Division II foe Fort Valley State at 5:30 p.m. Monday.
