HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Three players finished with double-digits in points to lead the Talladega College men's basketball team to an opening 63-36 win on the road at Oakwood University tonight.
The Tornadoes (8-1, 1-0 GCAC) found themselves going back and forth to start the game as they held an 8-6 lead. Talladega after reclaiming the lead,
JaVonni Bickham sparked a 16-7 run to put the team in front 24-13 with 6:50 remaining in the half. The Tornado defense allowed only three points over the remaining 6:50 while hitting a pair of jumpers and a three to push its lead to 31-16 going into halftime.
D'Andre Boyd opened up the second half with a jumper and a layup to put Talladega up, 35-16. The Tornadoes went on to score the next four points off a pair of free throws and a jumper to push its lead to 39-16 giving them its largest margin of the game. Oakwood (0-9, 0-2 GCAC) ended Talladega's short run by hitting a three with 16:24 left in the game to make it, 39-19. The Tornadoes responded with a 10-2 run to push their lead to 49-21 before the defense took over as it only allowed 15 points over the remaining 11 minutes and 16 seconds. Talladega was able to cruise to the victory and extend its winning streak to six.
The Talladega bench contributed by scoring 37 points to Oakwood's 15 while scoring 30 points in the paint to the 14 by the Ambassadors.
Talladega cleaned up on the boards 50 to 24 with 10 of them being on the offensive glass.
Bickham and
Issad Solano each tallied 11 points apiece for Talladega. Bickham finished with a team-high in field goals made with five while tying for a team-high in rebounds with eight. Solano finished a perfect 3-of-3 from beyond the arc. His three 3-pointers were a team-high.
Lamont Sams registered 10 points while shooting 3-of-7 from the floor and 3-of-4 from the line. He also tied for a team-high with eight boards.
Talladega is back on the road on Saturday, December 9 at 2 p.m. when it travels to Atlanta to face Morehouse College.
