Women’s Hoops Fall in Holiday Classic Opener to Clayton

MELBOURNE, Fla. – The Talladega College women's basketball team battled hard but lost the first game of the 2023 Florida Tech Women's Basketball Holiday Classic 68-39 to the Clayton State Lakers in the Clemente Center.
 
Clayton State used a strong defensive effort in the first half and forced 23 turnovers from the Tornadoes and turned those miscues into 19 points in the first 20 minutes.
 
Talladega held a brief lead early after Destiny Johnson hit a layup with 9:14 to go in the opening quarter. The Lakers responded with a layup before Amayla Sharif hit a free throw and a jumper to push the Dega advantage to 5-2. From there, CSU outscored the Tornadoes 15-4 to take a commanding 17-9 lead. After a nearly even second quarter, Clayton took a
27-15 lead to the half.
 
The Lakers limited Dega to just 24 points in the second half and scored 41 points on the way to the 68-39 win.
 
Makyla Arnold and Sharif both scored eight points while Johnson led on the boards with nine rebounds and added five blocks.
 
Hannah Wright and Jadah Waite led the Lakers with 14 points and Sariya Henry added with five rebounds.
