Tornadoes Overcome Slow Start in Win over SUNO

TALLADEGA, Ala. – The Talladega College women's basketball team trailed early but did not trail long on the way to a 63-46 win over the Southern University at New Orleans Knights Tuesday night in the Dr. Billy C. Hawkins Student Activity Center in Gulf Coast Athletic Conference action.

As the Dega (2-1, 1-0 GCAC) offense started slow, SUNO (0-3, 0-1) took advantage of the Tornadoes and pushed to an 11-5 lead at the 2:17 mark in the first after a layup from Savannah Hadley. The Knights went in the second quarter ahead 13-9.

Talladega compensated defense for offense in the second period, held SUNO to four points, and scored 11. Arieonna Booker cut the lead to 15-14 with a free throw at 6:01 before Irina Layne hit the final points of the quarter for SUNO with a layup at 5:44 to up 17-14.

Booker hit the layup at 3:33 to move Dega ahead 18-17 for the final lead change of the night. Destiny Johnson connected on a layup in the last two seconds of the half to send the Tornadoes to the halftime up 20-17.

Talladega's run lasted well into the third quarter, and Booker capped it with a layup at 7:35 to go 29-17. Layne finally ended the drought with a bucket at 6:40 to pull within 10 points at 29-19. However, the offense outscored SUNO 24-8 in the period for a 44-25 lead after 30 minutes of competition.

The Knights outscored Talladega 21-19 in the fourth, but the Tornadoes took care of business on the way to the 63-46 win.

Booker led all scorers with 16 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the floor, alongside two rebounds and two steals. Alexiah McMillian scored 10 points and a pair of steals, while Brooklynn Talton and Kierstan Usher posted five boards.

Dega shot 40.3 percent (25-of-62) from the floor and 65 percent (13-of-20) at the free-throw line as a unit.

Jordan Harris scored 13 points, Layne added 11 points and eight rebounds, but McKenna Harris finished with a game-high 11 rebounds.
