Tornadoes Spilt Palmetto State Road Trip

DENMARK, S.C. – The Talladega College women's basketball team earned a win and took a loss during a two-game trip to South Carolina capped by a loss to the Voorhees University Tigers 53-43 in Dawson Arena.
 
The Tornadoes (3-2) led early and bruised to a 7-0 lead following a pair of free throws from Arieonna Booker. Grace Lupumba finally got Voorhees on the board with a layup at 6:39, but Dega took a 9-3 lead to the quarter-break.
 
However, in the second quarter, once Talladega took an 11-5 lead after a jumper from Jakayla Geiger, the Tigers turned in a 7-0 run, finished with a jumper by Hallia Carl to take a 12-11 lead with 2:39 until half. The Tornadoes won a free throw contest to end the quarter and took a 14-13 lead to the locker room.
 
The second half belonged to Voorhees as the Tigers opened with an 8-1 run in the third quarter and led by as much as 12 points with 1:27 to go in the third period. The fourth quarter featured more scoring as both teams poured in 22 points, but the third provided enough separation to give Voorhees the 53-43 victory.
 
Booker led Dega with 11 points, four steals, and three rebounds. Brooklyn Talton patrolled the boards with a team-leading eight rebounds alongside seven points.
 
Ty'Shemia Bunkley was the highest scorer with 12 points and four rebounds to lead Voorhees.
 
The first leg of the road trip was successful for Talladega College women's basketball as the Tornadoes collected a 50-34 win over the Morris College Hornets Thursday night in Sumter, South Carolina.
 
Dega never trailed in the contest and started with a 9-0 run culminating with a jumper from Stephanie Hubard at the 2:54 mark. Morris outscored the Tornadoes the rest of the quarter, but Dega took an 11-6 lead to the quarter break.
 
In the second quarter, Talladega pushed to an 11-point advantage with 6:51 on the clock after a layup in transition by Amayla Sharif made the score 19-8. The Hornets cut the lead to 21-17 with 2:01 left, but Dega bounced back and took a 25-17 lead to half after Gieger scored with 17 seconds left.
 
The second half was all Tornadoes as the visiting squad outscored Morris 25-17 in the third and fourth quarters combined on the way to a 50-34 victory.
 
Geiger was the high scorer with nine points and a pair of rebounds. Makayla Arnold turned in eight points and eight rebounds, while Talton pulled down a team-high 10 boards. Booker filled the stat sheet with seven points, six rebounds, five steals, and four assists.

Talladega College travels for a pair of exhibitions before returning to Gulf Coast Athletic Conference competition against Wiley College on November 28 at 7 p.m. in Marshall, Texas.
