Dega Comes Up Short in Exhibition to GSW

AMERICUS, Ga. – In the final exhibition of the 2023-24 season, the Talladega College women's basketball team dropped a road contest to the Georgia Southwestern State Hurricanes 86-34 Tuesday night in the Storm Dome.
 
Facing their final NCAA Division II opponent of the season, the Tornadoes got off to a slow start as GSW opened with an 8-0 run before La'Daja Caldwell connected on a jumper with 3:54 left in the first to get the team on the board. Caldwell added a three-pointer two possessions later to cut the score to 11-5, and Amayla Sharif connected on a layup at 1:07 to bring Talladega within four points at 11-7. However, GSW scored the final five points of the quarter, capped by a three by Lexi McCully, to take a 16-7 lead after the first quarter.
 
The Hurricanes' lead grew as the home team outscored Dega 32-11 in the second halftime to take a 48-18 halftime advantage. GSW won the third quarter, 20-8, and the fourth, 18-8, on the way to an 86-34 exhibition victory.
 
Arieonna Booker finished the night as Dega's leading scorer with 11 points, three rebounds, two steals and an assist. Caldwell added nine points, and Sharif added eight points. Makayla Arnold led on the boards with seven rebounds.
 
As a unit, the Tornadoes shot 35 percent (14-of-40) from the floor, 50 percent (1-of-2) from three, and 38.5 percent (5-of-13) at the free throw line.
 
Talladega College will have a week off before returning to Gulf Coast Athletic Conference action against Wiley College. Tipoff in Marshall, Texas, is set for 7 p.m.
