ATLANTA, Ga. – The Talladega men's basketball team knocked off Fayetteville State Saturday evening by a score of 54-47.
The Tornadoes improve to 5-1 on the season after picking up back-to-back victories over Shaw and Fayetteville State at the Atlanta HBCU All-Stars Challenge at Forbes Arena on the campus of Morehouse College.
The Tornadoes canned 19-of-40 from the floor (47.5 percent), including five-of-15 (33.3 percent) from distance in the victory. The squad recorded seven steals in the contest and dished out seven assists on the 19 field goals.
Jevon Tatum led the way with a team-high 15 points off the bench. He connected on five-of-six from the floor, including three-of-three from distance. Tatum was automatic at the charity stripe, hitting both attempts.
JaVonni Bickham accounted for eight points on three-of-four shooting while
D'Andre Boyd and Milfred Campbell netted six points apiece.
Ethelbert Anum tallied five points and snagged a team-best nine rebounds. He had two of the team's three offensive boards on the night.
Lamont Sams chipped in four points while
Derek Burditt and
Tre Simmons had two points apiece.
Talladega jumped out to a 28-17 lead at the break behind a sensational 11-of-21 effort from the floor (52.4 percent) while limiting the opposition to a mere seven-of-17 (25.9 percent) during the first half.
Trailing 2-0, Anum got on the board off a pass from Bickham. Moments later, Bickham rebounded a miss and laid it up-and-in and the visitors never lost the lead from that point on. A
Corey Sands' three-ball gave the squad a 7-2 advantage.
Leading 15-9,
Jevon Tatum canned a jumper. Two free throws from
Tre Simmons extended the margin to double figures at 19-9 with 11:20 to play in the half. Campbell's jumper at the 6:10 mark pushed the advantage to 25-11. FSU cut the margin to eight but Tatum's three-ball with 32 seconds to go before halftime made it 28-17 at the break.
The designated home team trimmed the margin to four at the 12:55 mark of the second half but Tatum hit both free throws after he was fouled to go up 35-29.
D'Andre Boyd's lay-up and Bickham's jumper made it a 10-point contest just past the halfway point of the stanza.
Up by just five with 6:04 to play, Campbell nailed two free throws to go up seven. FSU cut the deficit to four twice more, but the Tornadoes would not let them get any closer.
Leading 48-44 with less than a minute to go, Tatum nailed a jumper en route to the seven-point victory.
Defensively, the Tornadoes frustrated FSU all night. For the game, the designated home team hit just 17-of-51 from the floor (33.3 percent), including a mere one-of-12 (8.3 percent) from downtown.
Talladega returns to action Wednesday when they play at Tuskegee at 3 p.m.
