ATLANTA, Ga. –
Jevon Tatum's 18 points off the bench for the Talladega College men's basketball team against NCAA Division II Shaw University this afternoon led to a 69-66 win at the HBCU All-Stars Challenge at the Forbes Arena on the campus of Morehouse College. Talladega moves to 4-1 on the season while the Bears fall to 1-2 on the year.
The Tornadoes wasted no time getting on the board to start the game as it opened up the first half with a 6-2 lead with
JaVonni Bickham scoring four of the six points. Shaw wasted no time and took the lead with a free throw, a pair of jumpers, and a three to go up 10-6 with 14:30 remaining. The Bears lead didn't last long as Tatum answered with a three and followed that up with a layup to put Talladega back in front, 11-10. After the Bears missed a layup and grabbed the offensive rebound, Tatum forced the turnover and stole it before hitting a jumper at the other end of the court to make it 13-10 with just under 13 and a half minutes.
The Bears answered right back as they tied the game at 13 off a three-pointer that came off a Talladega turnover. For almost the next five minutes both teams traded baskets but it was Shaw that came out with the 18-17 lead with 7:12 left to go. The Tornadoes responded 29 seconds later with a three-pointer of their own to reclaim the lead at, 20-17. Both teams again traded points with neither team getting more than a one-point lead on the other until
Tre Simmons and
Wilfred Campbell hit back-to-back threes to put Talladega in front 38-32 at halftime.
Coming out of the break Talladega pushed its lead to 47-38 with 14:43 left in the game. With just under 11 minutes to play the Tornadoes were able to increase its lead to ten, but Shaw chipped away at the lead by using three straight layups and a pair of free throws to make it a two-point game. A Talladega turnover led to a Bears' traditional three-pointer to give them a 54-53 lead. Shaw was able to build off of it but Talladega didn't go away as it trailed 62-61 with 2:29 left. The Tornadoes tied it on a free throw and then took the lead on a pair of foul shots. The game would be tied at 64 and after that, Talladega closed things out on five straight free throws to win, 69-66.
The game saw 12 lead changes and was tied 10 times.
As a team, Talladega shot 50 percent from three-point range while shooting 73.3 percent from the line.
Tatum finished the night going 5-of-8 from the floor and 2-of-2 from the arc while tallying three steals in the process to go along with his 18 points.
Bickham dropped 15 points of his own while going 13-of-19 from the foul line while
Talladega is back in action tomorrow at the HBCU All-Stars Challenge at 2 p.m. when it takes on Fayetteville State.
