TOUGALOO, Miss. – The Talladega College women's volleyball team got back in the win column this afternoon with a 3-0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-13) road over GCAC rival Tougaloo College. The Tornadoes moved to 19-8 and 10-1 in conference action while the Bulldogs are now 1-18 and 0-8 in the GCAC.
Talladega jumped out to a 12-3 lead in the opening set, but the Bulldogs attempted to claw their way back into as they cut the lead in half to make it, 14-7. The Tornadoes after that put the set out of reach as they went on to win 25-18 and go up 1-0 in the match.
Both teams found themselves tied at three to start set two before Talladega took a 9-6 lead. The Tornadoes then went on a 7-1 run to push its lead to 18-7, but the Bulldogs worked their way back after trailing 22-10 to cut the lead down to six. Tougaloo's late rally wasn't enough as Talladega went on to win 25-18 off a Bulldog service error.
Looking to close things out in set three, Talladega opened up a 12-5 lead on the Bulldogs. Tougaloo used a 6-2 run to trail 14-11 but that was as close as they would get as the Tornadoes used an 11-2 run to win the set and take the match, 3-0.
Talladega as a team registered a .347 hitting percentage for the match with a high of .464 hitting percentage in set three.
Zyaire Prettie Garrit led both teams in kills with 15 while registering six digs and two block assists. Teammates
Dominique Madarang and
Giovana Costarelli each tallied double-digits in assists. Madarang finished with a team-high 19 while Costarelli recorded 14.
Taquoia Rounds finished with a match-high three aces for Talladega.
Talladega is back in action tomorrow as it travels to Rust College for another conference match, which starts at 5 p.m.
