Tornadoes Stumble in Season Opener to LeMoyne-Owen

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Starting the season on the road, the visiting Talladega College women's basketball team could not find a way to pull the upset over NCAA Division II opponent LeMoyne-Owen College. The Magicians defeated the Tornadoes 49-27 on Saturday evening in Bruce Hall/Johnson Gymnasium.

Dega opened with the early lead after Alexiah McMillian opened all scoring with a pair of free throws in the first 15 seconds. LOC responded with five quick points to take a 5-2 lead capped by a jumper by A'Niya Boone.

At the 4:37 mark in the first, Anteresa Dickson splashed a jump shot to tie the contest at 6-6. However, when Jaya Hedgepeth responded with a shot in the paint to make it 8-6, LeMoyne-Owen pushed to a 12-6 lead after 10 minutes of play.

The Magicians went up 14-8 before Talladega responded with a 7-0 run to take a 15-14 lead, concluded by a three-pointer from Meadow Gillispie. Unfortunately, the run marked the final points for Dega before the half as the home LOC put together a 7-0 of their own and took a 21-16 lead to halftime.

In the second half, LeMoyne-Owen continued to push the pace and outscored the Tornadoes 28-12 on the way to a 49-27 win.

Kiersten Usher finished as the leading scorer with six points, three steals, and two assists. Dickson added five rebounds, four points, a block, and a steal. McMillian posted four points, four rebounds, and three steals.
