Talladega Sweeps Tougaloo Sunday Afternoon

TALLADEGA, Ala. – The Talladega College volleyball team cruised to a 3-0 win over Tougaloo Sunday afternoon.

The Tornadoes are now 26-8 overall, including 15-1 in league action. Set scores were 25-18, 25-16, 25-14.

Zyaire Prettie Garrit led the way with nine kills. Nedu Evans added eight kills and a pair of blocks. Josephine Gates and Kiana Polk tallied four kills apiece while Kortni Johnson and Giovana Costarelli each hammered home three kills.

Costarelli led the way with 15 assists and five aces. Dominique Medarang tallied eight assists in the sweep.

Dyani Steward posted five aces while Briyith Echeverri had three aces.

Taquoia Rounds and Echeverri had 11 digs apiece.

Talladega hit .209 for the match while holding the visitors to a mere -.043 attack percentage.

Leading 9-8 in the first set, a bad set gave the serve back to the home team. Gates slammed home a kill before four consecutive errors by the visitors. Garrit served up an ace for a 16-8 advantage. Leading 16-11, Kiana Polk hammered home a kill. Evans and Gates combined for a block before Gates and Polk added kills for a 20-11 edge. Up by five, 23-18, Evans added a kill. A bad set by Tougaloo ended the set at 25-18.

Up 7-3 in the second stanza, the Tornadoes embarked on an 8-0 spurt to essentially put the set away. During the run, Costarelli had a kill. She followed it up with an ace. Costarelli added a pair of aces during the run while Gates and Garrit added kills. Talladega would not let the visitors any closer than seven points the rest of the stanza.

Up 16-14 in the third set, Rounds slammed home a kill. That play started a 9-0 run by the home squad to wrap up the match. Johnson posted back-to-back kills to make it 23-14. After a ball handling error, Costarelli ended the contest with an ace.

The Tornadoes return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 24 at Miles College at 6 p.m.
