Women’s Hoops Drops Road Game at BPC, 86-55

MOUNT VERNON, Ga. – The Talladega College women's basketball team struggled in a tough Southern States Athletic Conference road matchup against the Brewton-Parker College Lady Barons Tuesday night. BPC grabbed an 86-55 home victory.

The Lady Barons (18-5, 10-4 SSAC) never trailed in their ninth consecutive victory and this game with the first three points of the night on a made free throw by Micah Bess and a layup by Sy-Marieona Williams. Talladega (5-15, 0-14 SSAC) scored the team's first points midway through the first quarter courtesy of a layup from Makayla Transou.

Williams hit a three-pointer to push the Lady Barons' lead to four, but Brooklyn Talton responded with a jumper on the next possession to bring the score to 6-4. After a free throw by Williams, Je'Nya Wilder hit a jumper to cut the lead to 7-6; however, this is as close as Dega would get to the surging BPC squad.

BPC went on a 9-0 run and pushed to a 16-6 advantage before Amayla Sharif hit a three to quiet the run with just under a minute left in the quarter. The Lady Barons held Talladega to four more points in the quarter to take a 22-13 lead after 10 minutes.

The Tornadoes' offense fared slightly better in the second but was still outscored 22-17 in the period. Transou was responsible for the bulk of the scoring with nine points on 3-of-4 shooting and grabbed a pair of rebounds in the quarter. Brewton-Parker took a 44-30 lead to the half despite Tannsou's efforts.

The second half was all BPC as the Lady Barons outscored Dega 42-25 in the second half on the way to the 86-55 win.

Transou played every minute of the game and finished with 22 points, six rebounds and a steal. Wilder scored in double figures with 10 points and added a team-leading eight rebounds.

Dega shot 35.1 percent (20-of-57) as a team, 40 percent (4-of-10) beyond the arc, and 50 percent (11-of-22) at the free-throw line.

Madison Evans posted 22 points, eight rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Williams added 18 points.

Talladega College returns to the Dr. Billy C. Hawkins Student Activity Center on Feb. 4 at noon to face the Loyola University Wolf Pack. Loyola is currently the 10th-ranked team in the country.
