Dega Finishes Season Sweep over BPC, 56-47

MOUNT VERNON, Ga. – For the second time this season, the Talladega College men's basketball team came away winners over the Brewton-Parker College Barons. This time the Tornadoes grabbed a 56-47 win Tuesday night in Southern States Athletic Conference action.

Dega (9-14, 3-12 SSAC) led for much of the game, but BPC (5-18, 3-12) scored the first points of the matchup off a jumper by Lance Smith in the opening minute. The Tornadoes responded with a monster 14-0 run started by a shot from Ethelbert Anum and capped by a three from Corey Sands.

Aaron Udell hit a three to end Talladega's run to move the score to 14-5, but Javon Tatum answered with a jumper to push the advantage back to 11 points.

The Tornadoes maintained no less than an eight-point lead throughout the half until Grant Sanders finished a layup in transition to get the Barons behind 28-22. Wilfred Campbell IV hit a three-pointer to give Dega a nine-point lead. However, BPC ended the first half with some momentum with consecutive threes from Jordan Johnson and Emmanuel Green, which cut the score to 31-28 after 20 minutes of action.

Sands and Campbell scored the first six points of the second half and put Talladega up by nine. Sands converted an old-school three-point play after hitting a jumper and finishing with the free throw, while Campbell did it the new-school way with a three-point shot.

Talladega's lead never dropped lower than eight points for most of the second and went as high as 12 points following Jordan Crumbley hitting three free throws to put his team up 47-35 with just over eight minutes left in the game.

BPC attempted to muster one more comeback and used a 7-0 run to cut the lead to 47-42 when Grant converted a free throw after being fouled during a successful dunk. Crumbley answered the big play with a three-ball on the next possession. Smith cut the lead to six points on two separate occasions for the Barons, including two made free throws with 1:11 remaining in the game, and made the score 52-46.

The Barons were held to only one more point in the game as the Tornadoes used four free throws to put BPC away 56-47 and sweep the season series.

Crumbley led all scorers with 18 points, went a perfect 3-for-3 from beyond the arc, and connected on all three free throw attempts. Keshawn Pegues controlled the boards with 10 rebounds and finished with nine points, two assists and two steals.

Dega finished 45.9 percent (17-of-37) from the floor, 42.9 percent (6-of-14) beyond the arc, and 84.2 percent (16-of-19) at the line.

Udell was the leading scorer for the Barons with 14 points, while Smith also reached double-digits with 10 points.

Talladega College returns to the Dr. Billy C. Hawkins Student Activity Center on Feb. 4 to face the Loyola University Wolf Pack. Loyola is currently the 15th-ranked team in the country. Tip-off is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start time.
