Road Rally Falls Short against Life, 71-56

MARIETTA, Ga. – The Talladega College women's basketball team overcame a large deficit but ran out of steam in a 71-56 loss to Southern States Athletic Conference foe the Life University Running Eagles Saturday afternoon.

Life (13-9, 5-7 SSAC) opened the game on an 8-0 run before Amayla Sharif scored a layup to get the Tornadoes (5-14, 0-13 SSAC) on the board with under seven and a half minutes remaining in the opening quarter. Dega struggled to score in the first and managed only seven more points in the quarter, capped by a three from Katerina Patkova in the final minute as the Running Eagles to a 22-9 lead to the second.

Talladega's offense started to get rolling in the next quarter. The Tornadoes outscored LU 17-13 in the period and cut the Running Eagles' lead down to six points following a Brooklyn Tate layup with just over two minutes until halftime to make the score 30-24. However, Life scored a pair of free throws from Tierra Tullis as time expired to take a 36-25 lead to the locker room.

The third quarter also belonged to Dega, as the team won the quarter 21-12 and stayed behind by no more than five points for most of the quarter. After Kierra York connected on a layup to put the Running Eagles up 47-43 at the 1:30 mark, Je'Nya Wilder closed the quarter with four straight points to tie the game 47-47 to end the period.

Twenty seconds into the fourth quarter Amir Brown gave Talladega its just lead of the contest with a layup to make the score 49-47. Kierra York used a second chance layup on the following possession to immediately re-tie the matchup. Free throws from Makayla Transou allowed Dega to reclaim the lead at 51-49. The back and forth continued with a three-pointer by Santavia Grant, which put Life back up by one.

The Tornadoes responded with a jumper by Bryanna Williams to take a 53-52 lead. However, on the following possession, the Running Eagles took the lead for good with a free throw by Fapou Semebene, and a made three by Grant after an offensive rebound to take a 56-53 lead with seven minutes reaming in the game. Life never relinquished the lead again and pushed to a 15-point, 71-56 win.

Transou led all scorers with 15 points and three rebounds, while Brown had 11 points, three rebounds and a pair of assists. Sharif paced the team on the boards with six rebounds, adding nine points and three steals.

Life had four players in double figures, with Semebene leading the way with 13 points. York posted a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Andrea Martin Ruiz and Grant each scored 12 points, while Tullis passed 11 assists.

The three-game SSAC road trip from Talladega College concludes on Jan. 31 with a stop in Mount Vernon, Georgia, to face Brewton-Parker College. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m. CST.
