Strong Second Half Lifts Life over Dega, 70-58

MARIETTA, Ga. – It was a tale of two halves for the Talladega College men's basketball team. The Tornadoes saw a decisive back-and-forth turn in favor of the Life University Running Eagles in a 70-58 loss in Southern States Athletic Conference action Saturday afternoon.
 
Wilfred Campbell scored the game's first points with a three-pointer for Dega (8-14, 2-12 SSAC). Shomik Shahjahan responded just over a minute later with a three of his own to get Life 15-6, 8-6) on the board at the 18:37 mark. Joshua Ward added two free throws in the next possession to grab the Running Eagles' first lead of the day.
 
Jordan Crumbley knocked down two free throws after being fouled on an offensive rebound putback to tie the game, and Ethelbert Anum grabbed a lead change for Dega to move the score to 7-5 with 16:27 left in the first half.
 
The game featured nine ties or lead changes before either team led by more than one possession. Tied at 13-13, Ward hit back-to-back layups to give the Running Eagles a four-point advantage. Javon Tatum hit a layup to cut the deficit in half, but Nathan Presnell dunked to put Life up four again.
 
With just over seven minutes until half, Keshawn Pegues took a steal for a dunk, and Simmons splashed a jumper to reclaim the lead for Dega. However, on the following possession, Srdjan Shahjahan hit a three to reclaim the lead for the Running Eagles at 25-24, which served as the game's final lead change. Ethelbert hit a pair of free throws to bring his team within a point, 29-28, with three minutes before the half. Despite Dega closing the gap, Life pushed to a 36-32 halftime lead.
 
The second half belonged to the Running Eagles, who steadily built on their lead from the first half. Life outscored Talladega 34-26 in the period to the 70-58 victory.
 
Pegues led all scorers with 19 points and grabbed more rebounds than everyone else with seven boards.
 
Life saw Presnell score 17 points on a perfect 8-for-8 from the floor and grabbed six rebounds in 20 minutes of game action off the bench. Ward finished with 12 points, six rebounds, six assists and two steals.
 
The three-game SSAC road trip from Talladega College concludes on Jan. 31 with a stop in Mount Vernon, Georgia, to face Brewton-Parker College. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. CST.
